Kokesh takes fourth at NCAA Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Wagner native and University of Nebraska-Lincoln junior Robert Kokesh finished fourth Saturday at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

He beat No. 4 seed Mike Evans, of Iowa, in the consolation semifinals, but fell to No. 6 seed Logan Storley, of Minnesota, in the third-place match. Storley, another South Dakota native, won 3-1 and beat Kokesh in the quarterfinals.

Kokesh, a two-time All-American, finished the season 37-3. Last year, Kokesh topped Storley in the third-place match

The Huskers took 11th with 43.5 points and Penn State won its fourth straight title with 109.5 points. Minnesota took second and trailed PSU by 5.5 points.

SDSU women top Creighton in second round of WNIT

BROOKINGS — The South Dakota State University women’s basketball team had a 28-0 run and beat Creighton 62-51 in the second round of the Women’s NIT Sunday at Frost Arena.

There were 2,152 people in attendance at Frost Arena.

Steph Paluch had 19 points to lead SDSU, Megan Waytashek added 11 and Gabby Boever had 10.

Mitchell native and freshman Kerri Young was held scoreless and had two rebounds.

The Jackrabbits (24-9) host the Minnesota Gophers in a Sweet 16 game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Frost Arena in Brookings.
