Rietveld finished 13th overall with a time of 20 minutes, 50.25 seconds at the Herb Blakely Invitational Sept. 14 in Madison, helping the Lancers to a first-place finish in the meet.

Mitchell native and former Dakota State Trojan Stephanie Uher represented the Dakota State Alumni women’s cross country team Sept. 14 at the Herb Blakely Invitational. Uher, who used the last of her college athletic eligibility at the conclusion of the 2013 school year, finished 26th overall in the meet with a time of 22:11.96.

Mitchell Christian graduate Samantha Piehl, a sophomore for the Iowa Lakes Community College women’s cross country team, finished 22nd overall Friday at the Buena Vista Invitational in Storm Lake, Iowa, finishing in 31:32.01.

Piehl and the Lakers do not race again until Oct. 12 when they travel to McCook Lake for the Briar Cliff Invite.

Lindsey Mettler, a Wessington Springs native, helped the University of Sioux Falls women’s cross country team to a fifth-place finish Sept. 6 at the Augustana Twilight Meet in Sioux Falls. Mettler, a junior for the Cougars, finished the race with a time of 20:52.70.

USF competes again Oct. 12 in the Briar Cliff Invite at McCook Lake.

Jake Bartscher, a redshirt freshman on the Augustana College football team, made his first career start for the Vikings Saturday in a 24-0 win over Bemidji State at Kirkeby-Over Stadium in Sioux Falls. The 6-foot-5 tight end and Hanson High School graduate finished with one reception for seven yards.

Brandon Mohr leads the Augustana Vikings football team in tackles this season with 31.

Mohr, whose father, Bryan, is a Mitchell High School graduate, has helped Augustana to a 2-1 record this season.

Mohr has 24 assisted and seven solo tackles for the Viking defense, which held Bemidji State scoreless last week.

Augustana (2-1, 2-1 NSIC) travels to St. Cloud, Minn., Saturday to take on St. Cloud State University.

Kristin Sabers, a former golf standout for the Mitchell Kernels, competed in the USGA state team golf tournament Sept. 17-19 in Kettering, Ohio. Sabers, a freshman who plays on the DWU women’s basketball team, was one of three golfers from the state of South Dakota to compete in the tournament, which takes place every two years.

Selection for the tournament is based on a point system in which the top three qualifiers are chosen to represent his or her state. Sabers placed sixth, but because of college golf restrictions, three golfers ahead of her were unable to compete. Sabers shot a 93 on the first day of the tournament and an 88 in the second round, helping South Dakota to a 34th-place finish.

Other members of the team included Karla Cotton, a former University of Iowa golfer, and Morgan Fitts, who finished her career at South Dakota State in the spring. Fitts’ younger sister, Lauren, was last year’s GPAC women’s golfer of the year as a freshman for Dakota Wesleyan.
