Amateur baseball roundup: Horned Frogs hold off Mudcats

CORSICA—Corsica/Stickney used a two-run seventh to beat Parkston 7-5 in a Sunshine League game on Thursday. The Horned Frogs out-hit Parkston 12-11 in their win.

Logan Risse hit two home runs, including the go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh, and drove in four runs for Corsica/Stickney. Aaron Groeneweg led the Horned Frogs with three hits and three RBIs, and Luke Bamberg and Ryan Buck each went 2-for-4. Groeneweg threw a complete game in which he allowed five earned runs, 11 hits and three walks.

For Parkston, Jesse Grosdidier went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Spencer Lucas went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Chris Welch and Will Lutjen each drove in a run. Jake Weber received the loss in his seven-inning start as he allowed seven earned runs, 11 hits and struck out seven batters.

Corsica-Stickney (7-3, 5-3 Sunshine League) plays at Alexandria on Sunday. Parkston (9-8, 4-5 Sunshine League) hosts Wagner on Sunday.

Winner/Colome 9, Mount Vernon 5

WINNER—Derek Graesser mowed down 15 batters in Winner/Colome's Sunshine League victory over Mount Vernon on Thursday. Graesser gave up five hits and five runs (four earned) in the complete-game performance.

The Pheasants' offense complemented Graesser. Drew Weber finished with three of the team's 11 hits. He also drove in a run.

Reed Harter hit a single, a double and drove in three runs. Austin Calhoon and Austin Richey each had two hits. Geno Katz added a double, Zach Harter hit a single and Kelly O'Bryan drove in two runs.

For Mount Vernon, Deric Denning, Spencer Neugebauer, Cameron Deinert, Jason Spicer and Jake Steffen each had a hit. Denning, Neugebauer and Spicer each drove in a run. Ben Miller took the loss, allowing nine hits and eight runs (six earned) in 5 2/3 innings.

Winner/Colome (12-1, 8-1 Sunshine League) plays at Dimock/Emery on Sunday. Mount Vernon (3-8, 2-8 Sunshine League) hosts Platte on Sunday.

Plankinton 3, Kimball/White Lake 0

WHITE LAKE—Plankinton and Kimball/White Lake both had eight hits on Thursday in Pony Hills League action.

Chris Hill, of Plankinton, hit a two-run home run in the sixth to extend the Bankers lead 3-0. Trevor Salmonson and Josh Geppert each had a pair of hits, while Trevor Boyd, Ryan Urban and Josh Enquist, who hit an RBI-single in the fourth, all had a hit. Enquist threw six shutout innings in his start as he struck out seven batters.

Wes Kroupa allowed an earned run and struck out three in 4 2/3 innings for Kimball/White Lake. Brian Zeman gave up two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of relief. Javan Holan led the team with two hits.

Plankinkton (7-3, 6-1 Pony Hills) hosts South Central on Sunday. Kimball/White Lake (2-4 Pony Hills) plays at Miller on Sunday.

Chamberlain 10, Miller 6

CHAMBERLAIN—Chamberlain was powered by 12 hits in its win over Miller in Pony Hills League action on Thursday.

Jake Byre went 4-for-5, and Ryan Randall added three hits and two RBIs for Chamberlain. Byre also started the game for the Mallards, lasting 6 1/3 innings and giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits and six walks.

For Miller, Matt Randall went 4-for-5 with two RBIs, and Josh Hoffman had two hits and three RBIs. On the mound, Tarek Butterfield pitched five innings in his start and gave up seven runs (six earned), nine hits and three walks. He also struck out four.

Chamberlain (3-4 Pony Hills League) plays at Four Corners in Hayes on Sunday. Miller (4-5 Pony Hills League) hosts Kimball/White Lake on Sunday.

Yankton 8, Menno 4

MENNO—Yankton used 16 hits and five runs in the final three innings to get by Menno on Thursday in a South Central League game.

Alex Mueller led Yankton with four hits. Sheldon Gant and Mason Townsend each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs each, and Nik Davis added two RBIs during his 1-for-5 day. Mark Hollingsworth earned the win with his eight-inning performance of four-run ball. He fanned six batters and allowed seven hits and four walks.

For Menno, Dylan Lehr, Macon Oplinger, Cody Ulmer, Tate Bruckner, Ryan Liebl, Caleb Preszler and Tyler Miller each recorded a hit. Doug Hall pitched a complete game, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 16 hits and three walks, while also striking out seven.

Yankton (7-2) hosts Freeman on Sunday. Menno (7-3) hosts Crofton, Nebraska, on June 28.

Canova 10, Madison 9

MADISON—Mike Newman's two-run single in the top of the ninth inning propelled the Canova Gang to a Cornbelt League victory over the Madison Broncos on Thursday.

Garrett Gassman finished with two hits and drove in three runs, including an RBI single to slice the deficit to 9-8 in the ninth. Justin Miller added four hits, three doubles and drove in a run. Jared Miller had three hits and two RBIs. Derek Miller and Trey Krier each had two hits, while Krier had an RBI. Krier earned the win, striking out six batters, allowing eight runs (five earned) and scattering 11 hits in seven innings.

For Madison, Greg Biagi finished with four hits. Jacob Giles took the loss. He allowed five hits, three earned runs and one strikeout.

Canova (9-1 Cornbelt League) plays at Humboldt/Hartford on Sunday. Madison (6-4 Cornbelt League) hosts Lennox Only One on Sunday.
