Area volleyball roundup: WiLdKats outlast Titans

PLANKINTON—Kimball/White Lake edged Mount Vernon/Plankinton in a five-set marathon match on Tuesday to give coach Sarah Deffenbaugh her 300th career coaching win. Set scores were 25-20, 14-25, 26-24, 25-27, 15-10.

Kimball/White Lake (6-3): Kennedy Leiferman led the WiLdKats as she recorded 23 kills, two aces and a block. Catie Natvig served two aces, while Heather Munsen finished with 35 assists. Darby Deffenbaugh recorded 38 digs for KWL. The WiLdKats host Corsica-Stickney on Sept. 18 in White Lake.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (4-5): Katlyn Briggs led the Titans with 15 kills and four blocks, while Hailey Walz dished out 15 assists and Reagan Klooz came up with 24 digs. MVP hosts Mitchell Christian on Thursday.

Wagner 3, Avon 1

WAGNER—Wagner won its fifth straight match in a four-set home victory over Avon, 27-25, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-8.

Wagner (8-1): Abby Brunsing had a huge night, registering 21 kills and 18 digs, while Faith Tyler had 23 digs, 12 kills and five aces. Kayli Kocer added 11 kills and four blocks for the Red Raiders. Emilea Cimpl and Lizzie Tyler had 23 and 20 assists, respectively. The Red Raiders play in the Cavalier Clash on Saturday in Tyndall.

Avon (5-3): KaCee Zacharias led the Pirates in defeat with 14 digs, four kills and three aces. Lauren Sees added 15 digs and Madisyn Cameron pitched in 14 aces. Avon plays in the Cavalier Clash Tournament on Saturday in Tyndall.

Freeman 3, Bridgewater-Emery 0

FREEMAN—Freeman picked up its 10th win of the season with a prep volleyball sweep against Bridgewater-Emery on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-21, 25-20 and 28-26.

Freeman (10-1): Emily Miller powered Freeman with 17 kills, six digs and five blocks. Dayna Roth recorded 10 kills, six blocks and three aces. Josie Fuhrmann added 29 assists. Freeman hosts Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Thursday.

Bridgewater-Emery (4-2): Sydney Hoffman and Haley Schulz finished with six kills and four blocks apiece. Sophia Potter had 11 assists, while Kerrigan Schultz had two aces, three kills, six digs and eight assists. Joslyn Schrank finished with 14 digs and Katelyn Kotas had seven digs. The Huskies host Viborg-Hurley on Thursday in Emery.

Canistota 3, Hanson 1

CANISTOTA— Canistota recorded its seventh consecutive win on Tuesday despite dropping the first set to visiting Hanson. The Hawks came back to win in four sets, 22-25, 25-17, 25-15 and 25-21.

Canistota (8-1): Hannah Parry had a big night, posting 33 assists, 15 digs and two aces, while MiKenzie Kirby had 21 digs, 11 kills and four aces and Noelle Hofer added 15 kills and nine digs. Cassidy Keller also had 29 digs and four aces. The Hawks are slated to play in the Bridgewater-Emery Tournament on Saturday in Emery.

Hanson (4-3): The Beavers were led by Ellie Tuschen's 20 digs and four kills and Morgan Huber's 11 digs and seven kills. Megan Guericke had 12 digs, three blocks and three assists, while Jacy Waldera pitched in 19 assists and four kills. Hanson plays in the Bridgewater-Emery Tournament in Emery on Saturday.

Corsica-Stickney 3, Parkston 0

PARKSTON—Corsica-Stickney traveled to Parkston on Tuesday looking to snap a four-match losing streak and it did just that, edging its hosts in three tight sets, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-21.

Corsica-Stickney (4-5): Raven Barse had a stellar all-around performance, racking up 10 digs, six kills, five aces and three blocks, while Kassidy Clark added 16 assists and seven digs. Courtney Menning had nine digs, five blocks and three digs, while Bridget Burke added five kills, three blocks and three digs. The Jaguars travel to Ethan on Thursday.

Parkston (2-7): Izzy Hohn led Parkston with 21 assists and Tiah Holzbauer had a match-high 14 digs, while Ammber Albrecht added seven kills and Brenna Walz pitched in six kills. The Trojans travel to Lennox on Thursday.

Menno 3, Howard 0

MENNO—The Menno Wolves got back to .500 on Tuesday as it took down Howard in straight sets. Set scores were 25-10, 25-16, 25-20.

Menno (3-3): Eisley Sayler stuffed the stat sheet with 14 kills, four digs, two aces and two blocks for the Wolves. Kiara Nusz led the team with eight aces, while Tess Oplinger served seven aces in the win. Oplinger also led the team with 18 assists and chipped in 11 digs, though Hailey Handel led Menno with 18 digs. The Wolves play in the Bridgewater-Emery tournament on Saturday in Emery.

Howard (1-7): Madison Kizer served two aces for the Tigers in the loss. Austyn Smit led Howard with six kills and also added five digs. Kyra Shumaker finished with a team-best six digs and Emma Rudebusch had a team-high six assists. The Tigers host Chester Area on Thursday.

Sioux Falls Christian 3, MCM 1

SALEM—Class A No. 1 Sioux Falls Christian dropped a set but still managed to get by McCook Central/Montrose in four sets on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-13, 17-25, 25-20, 25-15.

Sioux Falls Christian (11-3): Kylee Van Egdom served five aces for the Chargers, while also recording 17 kills, six digs and four blocks. Jamaica Calkhoven led the team with 24 digs, while Abby Glanzer had 17 digs. Kelsi Heard led the Chargers with 26 assists. The Chargers host Dakota Valley on Sept. 20.

McCook Central/Montrose (10-3): Emily Bies had 28 assists and 16 digs in the loss for the Fighting Cougars. She and Aleah Ries both served an ace. Abigail Van Ruler had 13 kills and Cassy Knudsen finished with 13 digs in the loss. The Fighting Cougars travel to Beresford on Thursday.

SCW 3, Wessington Springs 1

WOONSOCKET—Sanborn Central/Woonsocket responded after losing the third set to defeat Wessington Springs in four sets. Set scores were 25-21, 25-14, 14-25, 25-15.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (6-5): Madi Moody paved the way for the Blackhawks with 26 assists, 17 digs and an ace. Erica Howard had 12 kills and an ace. Tesa Jensen led the team with 14 kills. Kaylee White had 13 assists. The Blackhawks plays Oldham-Ramona/Rutland in Forestburg on Saturday.

Wessington Springs (2-4): Chasity Vissia had three aces for the Spartans, along with 12 assists and four kills. Maddie Neely added eight kills and eight digs, while Piper Jones, Makayla Dornbusch and Sierra Burg all served two aces. The Spartans play Crow Creek in Stephan on Thursday.

AC/DC 3, Scotland 2

SCOTLAND—Andes Central/Dakota Christian dropped the first two sets but came back to beat Scotland in five sets on Tuesday. Set scores were 23-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-14 and 15-10.

Andes Central/Dakota Christian (5-2): Brianna Deurmier had 28 assists, 15 digs and three aces in the win. Tyra Medicine Horn accounted for 24 digs for the Thunder, while Melanie Mudder led the team with four aces. Anna Medicine Horn and Isabel Pheifer each had three aces, as well. The Thunder play in the Cavalier Clash Tournament in Tyndall on Saturday.

Scotland (1-5): Kennedy Bietz led the Highlanders with 21 digs and 12 kills. McKensie Sedlacek served three aces, along with six kills and six digs. Rylee Conrad also had three aces and 26 assists. The Highlanders play in the Bridgewater-Emery Tournament in Emery on Saturday.

Wolsey-Wessington 3, Mitchell Christian 0

WOLSEY—Wolsey-Wessington won its third match in a row after a three-set win over visiting Mitchell Christian, 25-17, 25-17 and 25-19.

Wolsey-Wessington (3-1): Lizzi Brandt led the Warbirds with 13 kills, seven digs and four aces, while Chantel Haider had nine digs, seven kills and four aces and Shayla Muilenburg added a match-high 31 assists. Wolsey-Wessington plays Aberdeen Christian on Thursday in Aberdeen.

Mitchell Christian (2-7): The Golden Eagles got 11 assists and seven digs from Erica Thompson and 10 digs from Sarah Morris. Anna Cooper and Maggie Reynen also added six kills apiece in the loss. Mitchell Christian plays Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Thursday in Mount Vernon.

Platte-Geddes 3, Colome 1

PLATTE—The Black Panthers took down Colome in four sets on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-13, 25-19, 25-27, 25-22.

Platte-Geddes (4-7): Sawyer Naasz finished with 21 kills, eight digs and five aces for the Black Panthers, while Courtney Neuman served two aces to go along with 23 assists, 10 digs and eight kills. Tori Weins had eight kills, three digs and an ace in the win. Regan Hoffman accounted for 15 digs. The Black Panthers compete in the Cavalier Clash on Saturday in Tyndall.

Colome (4-5): Makayla Shippy finished with 28 assists and four digs for the Cowgirls, while Kaydee Heath accounted for 13 kills, eight digs, two blocks and an ace. Rayne Hermsen had six kills and five digs, while also serving two aces. Colome hosts St. Francis Indian on Monday.

Chamberlain 3, Todd County 1

CHAMBERLAIN—Chamberlain downed Todd County in four sets in a prep volleyball match on Tuesday. Set scores were 28-26, 22-25, 25-18 and 25-17.

Chamberlain (4-2): Mady Handel put down a team-high 16 kills and Makenzie Sorensen dished out 16 assists. Avany Long finished with eight digs and nine kills. Darynn Burke added seven digs, while Makenzy Mutziger had four aces and 10 assists. The Cubs play at the Big Dakota Conference Tournament on Saturday in Fort Pierre.

Bon Homme 3, TDA 1

TYNDALL—Bon Homme picked up its first win of the season against Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Tuesday. Set scores were 28-26, 25-16, 25-19 and 25-22.

Bon Homme (1-6): Jenae Alberts had 10 kills and 16 digs. Johanna Jelsma finished with 37 assists, five digs and four aces. Ciera Himes added nine kills and four digs. Emily Cap added 15 digs. The Cavaliers host Irene-Wakonda on Thursday in Tyndall.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour (1-5): Mattilynn Reiner paced the Nighthawks with 10 kills and seven digs. Bailey Spaans added 20 assists and four digs. Hannah Whitney finished with 19 digs, while Jenna Jones had eight digs. The Nighthawks play at Freeman on Thursday.
