Mitchell Christian boys race to title at Wagner Invite

PICKSTOWN—The Wagner High School cross-country team held the Wagner Invitational on Monday at Randall Hills Country Club, with 30 runners vying for the championship.

Mitchell Christian School proved to be the class of the boys race, placing all four of its runners in the top-10 to post a final score of 10 points, besting Wagner's 15 to win the team championship.

The Golden Eagles also boasted the individual title, with Alec Nelson's time of 18:31 was nearly 50 seconds faster than second place finisher Joe Grassrid of Menno. Meanwhile, Max Reynen earned a fifth-place finish, Nathanael Anderberg was in ninth and Braeden Nydam was in tenth for Mitchell Christian.

Wagner's Michael Barnett took third, seven seconds ahead of Tripp-Delmont/Armour's Connor VanDerWerff, who finished fourth.

Wagner would earn the girls team championship, placing three runners in the top six, with Alcista Dion, Maggie Barnett and Rose Eitemiller taking fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

The Red Raiders ended with nine points, which was four ahead of Andes Central/Dakota Christian's 13. The Thunder may have gotten second as a team, but Isabella Brouwer was the overall champion. Brouwer's time of 21:56 was nearly a full minute better than Menno's Morgan Edelman, who took second place. Hannah Hansum took seventh for AC/DC, while Sonya Hansum placed ninth. Hannah Stremick of Tripp-Delmont/Armour took third.
