Area volleyball roundup: Golden Eagles stop Crusaders

After a slow start to Tuesday's match, Mitchell Christian School was eventually able to surge ahead of guest Sunshine Bible Academy for a three-set sweep, 25-20, 25-11 and 25-15.

Mitchell Christian (2-0): Sarah Morris had seven digs and two aces in the win, while Erica Thompson had four digs and four assists. Maggie Reynen also chipped in four kills and two aces. Mitchell Christian travels to Dell Rapids St. Mary on Thursday

Sunshine Bible Academy (0-2): Victoria Paul led the way for the Crusaders in defeat with eight assists and four digs, while Abby Haun added eight aces and five digs. Dori Brockel also had a team-high eight digs. Sunshine Bible Academy plays Highmore-Harrold on Tuesday.

McCook Central/Montrose 3, Chester Area 2

CHESTER—McCook Central/Montrose traveled to Chester Area, ranked No. 3 in Class B, for its conference opener and the fans were treated to a back-and-forth affair, with the visitors scoring a win, 21-25, 25-19, 26-24, 16-25 and 15-13.

McCook Central/Montrose (5-2): Emily Bies had a monstrous game, dishing out 50 assists and coming up with 17 digs, while Aleah Ries notched 21 digs, 17 kills and four aces and Kenna Kranz had 16 kills and 21 digs. McCook Central/Montrose plays Parker in Montrose on Thursday.

Chester Area (1-1): Hailey Ewoldt had 49 assists, while Hanna Reiff had 46 digs. Makenna Larson chipped in 38 digs and 12 kills, while Jadon Wages had 21 kills and two blocks. Chester Area hosts Baltic on Tuesday.

Avon 3, Parkston 1

PARKSTON—Avon battled Parkston to a four-set win on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-22, 25-21, 24-26, 25-21.

Avon (2-2): Maddie Kocmich and KaCee Zacharias led the Pirates with two aces a piece, while Zacharias also added seven kills. Natalie Zacharias finished with 15 digs and eight kills. Madisyn Cameron had a team-high 27 assists in the win. Avon plays Andes Central/Dakota Christian in Lake Andes on Thursday.

Parkston (1-5): Izzy Hohn led the team with 25 assists and also added 12 digs. Tiah Holzbauer recorded 13 assists, seven kills and served three aces, as well. Amber Albrecht finished with nine kills and seven digs, while she and Brenna Walz both had an ace. The Trojans play Hanson in Alexandria on Thursday.

Chamberlain 3, Stanley County 2

CHAMBERLAIN—Chamberlain won a back-and-forth match over Stanley County on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-16, 16-25, 25-18, 23-25 and 15-12.

Chamberlain (2-0): Mady Handel had a team-high four aces for the Cubs, while Makenzy Mutziger served three aces. Hannah Anderson filled the stat sheet with 17 kills and six blocks. Avany Long added seven digs and six kills, and Makenzie Sorensen finished with 16 assists. Chamberlain travels to Wagner on Thursday.

Stanley County (0-3): Stats not reported. Stanley County travels to White River on Saturday.

Ethan 3, Kimball/White Lake 0

ETHAN—Class B No. 4 Ethan opened its season with a straight-set win over Kimball/White Lake on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-17, 25-19, 25-21.

Ethan (1-0): Jada Plastow stuffed the stat sheet with 11 digs, 10 kills and five blocks for Ethan. Karly Gustafson had a match-high four aces, while Jessica Bartscher finished with 29 assists. Maddie Miiller recorded 23 digs. Ethan plays Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in Woonsocket on Thursday.

Kimball/White Lake (1-1): Darby Deffenbaugh had 16 digs and eight kills for the WiLdKats. Heather Munsen added 12 assists, while Kennedy Leiferman finished with four blocks. Kimball/White Lake plays Burke in White Lake on Thursday.

Menno 3, Tripp-Delmont/Armour 0

TRIPP—Menno swept Tripp-Delmont/Armour in a prep volleyball match on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-21, 25-21 and 25-19.

Menno (2-0): Eisley Sayler recorded a double-double with 14 digs and 11 kills. Kiara Nusz added 11 kills, nine digs and two blocks. Hailey Handel recorded 10 kills and nine digs. Tess Oplinger finished with 19 assists, 11 digs and six kills. Jaedyn Oplinger had a double-double with 16 assists and 13 digs. Menno plays Freeman Academy/Marion in Freeman on Thursday.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour (0-2): Kianna Payer paced the Nighthawks with 10 digs and five kills. Hannah Whitney recorded 13 digs, while Bailey Spaans had 15 assists. Mattilynn Reiner recorded six kills. TDA travels to Avon on Tuesday.

Gregory 3, St. Francis Indian 0

GREGORY—Gregory picked up its first victory of the season with a prep volleyball sweep against St. Francis Indian on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-11, 25-22 and 25-15.

Gregory (1-1): KaeLee Haney and Megan Warnke had nine kills and seven kills, respectively. Haney added nine aces, while Addy Nelson also had nine aces. Sydney Svatos dished out 15 assists and Jaslee Kerner recorded seven digs. Gregory plays Lyman in Presho on Thursday.

St. Francis Indian (0-1): Stats not reported. St. Francis travels to Pine Ridge on Thursday.

Andes Central/Dakota Christian 3, Bon Homme 1

LAKE ANDES— Andes Central/Dakota Christian handed Bon Homme its second loss in as many days on Tuesday, 25-22, 25-7, 12-25 and 25-21.

Andes Central/Dakota Christian (3-1): Brianna Deurmier led the home team with 15 assists, four digs and three aces, while Tyra Medicine Horn had 15 digs, nine kills and six blocks. Isabel Pheifer also chipped in nine digs and six kills. Andes Central/Dakota Christian plays Avon Thursday in Lake Andes.

Bon Homme (0-3): Emily Cap had a match-high 20 digs and Ciera Himes added seven kills and seven digs. Bon Homme looks for its first win of the season against West Central in Hartford on Thursday.

Freeman 3, Irene-Wakonda 0

FREEMAN—Freeman topped Irene-Wakonda in straight sets in a prep volleyball match on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-16, 25-20 and 25-14.

Freeman (1-0): Josie Fuhrmann paced Freeman with 21 assists, 15 digs and three aces. Emily Miller, Dayna Roth and Hannah Eberts had eight kills apiece. Eberts and Miller had two blocks apiece. Roth added 20 digs. Emmarie Edwards chipped in with 16 digs. Jaimie Glanzer had 35 digs and three aces. Freeman travels to Howard on Thursday.

Irene-Wakonda (1-2): Ashley Emmick had 12 digs, while Morgan Bak had four kills and three blocks. Irene-Wakonda travels to Canton on Thursday.

Winner 3, Burke 2

WINNER—Winner was able to survive a five-set match against Burke on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 22-25, 15-13.

Winner (3-0): Alexis Richey had 22 digs and two aces for the Warriors, while Morgan Hammerbeck had three aces and Ellie Brozik added two. Hammerbeck also had 24 digs and 17 kills. Brozik chipped in 13 kills and 11 digs. Winner plays Ainsworth, Neb., and Valentine, Neb., in Ainsworth on Thursday.

Burke (1-1): Taylee Indahl led the team with 20 kills and two aces, while also adding 20 digs. Lahna Matucha finished with a team-high 35 digs and 16 kills for the Cougars. Lainee Schonebaum added 32 digs, as well. Burke plays Kimball/White Lake in White Lake on Thursday.

Viborg-Hurley 3, Bon Homme 1

TYNDALL—Viborg-Hurley topped Bon Homme in a prep volleyball match on Monday.

Viborg-Hurley (5-1): Nevaeh Ronke finished with seven kills and Holly Richards added five kills. Sydney Voss had 13 digs and two aces. Hannah Simonsen dished out six assists and Tori Hansen added five blocks.

Bon Homme (0-2): Ciera Himes led the Cavaliers with nine kills and three aces. McKenzie Carson and Jenae Alberts had seven and six kills, respectively. Johanna Jelsma recorded 18 assists.
