Locals claim two titles at 4H Rodeo Finals
FORT PIERRE—The 4H Rodeo Finals were held at Fort Pierre on Aug. 17-19, with a couple of local contestants claiming top-five finishes.
A pair of Mitchell contestants swept the top-two spots in steer wrestling. Alex Bergeson, a high school state champion in steer wrestling, saw major improvement from his first to second go in steer wrestling.
He placed sixth with a time of 5.440 in his first go, but won the event with a second-go time of 4.18. Ryan Bergeson placed second, with a time of 4.54.
Mason Moody, of Letcher, had a few top-three finishes, including winning the team roping with heeling partner Tate Johnson. They finished in 8.990 seconds. Moody also took second in bull riding with a first-go score of 60, finished third in average for team roping and fourth in average for bull riding.
Letcher's Kaitlyn Sandland finished fourth in goat tying, finishing in 7.670 on her first go.
In the junior division, Teya Moody, of Letcher, won the average and state championship in barrel racing, finishing in 17.343 to take the state title by less than 0.5 seconds.
