Area volleyball roundup: No. 1 Northwestern wins Parkston Tourney

PARKSTON—Northwestern was crowned champions of the Parkston Volleyball Tournament on Saturday in round robin play, edging Wagner for the championship by winning the head-to-head battle, 25-23 and 25-15.

Northwestern (6-0): Madalyn Groft led the top-ranked team in Class B with 19 assists and six kills, while Sydney Schell had eight kills and seven digs.

Wagner (4-1): Lizzie Tyler had 10 assists and seven digs in a losing effort for Wagner, while Faith Tyler had seven kills and six digs. Kirstyn Roth had a match-high 10 digs.

Northwestern faces Sisseton in Mellette on Tuesday, while Wagner hosts Chamberlain on Thursday.

Northwestern 2, Parkston 0

PARKSTON—Parkston dropped a two-set match to the eventual Parkston Tournament champions, 25-11 and 25-15.

Northwestern (6-0): Northwestern got 17 assists from Madalyn Groft, while Riley Grandpre had five kills, five digs and three aces. Sydney Shell added seven kills, three assists, two digs and an ace.

Parkston (1-4): The Trojans got five digs from Ellie Wiedenbach and nine assists and two blocks from Izzy Hohn. Parkston hosts Avon on Tuesday.

Arlington 2, Parkston 0

PARKSTON—Arlington pulled out a two-set win over the hosts in the Parkston Tournament for its only win of the day, 25-17 and 25-20.

Arlington (1-3): Marissa Baker led the Cardinals with 19 assists, six digs and three aces, while Jeryn Christensen added 13 digs. Jayna Haufschild had a stellar all-around game with eight kills, five digs, two blocks and two aces. Arlington returns to the court Tuesday to host Deubrook Area.

Parkston (1-4): Amber Albrecht had a match-high 14 digs for the Trojans, while Izzy Hohn had 12 assists and Tiah Holzbauer had seven digs.

Wagner 2, Parkston 0

PARKSTON—Parkston gave the eventual tournament runner-up a scare, but Wagner was able to squeeze two wins, 25-21 and 25-21.

Wagner (4-1): Faith Tyler had a big game for the Red Raiders, recording 15 digs, six kills and three blocks, while Lizzie Tyler had 10 assists and seven digs. Abby Brunsing added 10 kills and four digs.

Parkston (1-4): Izzy Hohn had a match-high 15 assists, while also coming up with six digs. Brenna Walz pitched in nine digs and Amber Albrecht had six kills and six digs.

McCook Central/Montrose 2, Parkston 0

PARKSTON—McCook Central/Montrose downed the hosts of the Parkston Tournament in two sets, 25-10 and 25-14.

McCook Central/Montrose (3-2): This was one of two victories on the day for the Fighting Cougars, who came into the tournament ranked No. 4 in Class A by the South Dakota media.

Parkston (1-4): Tiah Holzbauer recorded 12 digs, while Amber Albrecht had eight and Brenna Walz added seven.

McCook Central/Montrose is back in action on Tuesday against Mount Vernon/Plankinton at Salem.

Wagner 2, Arlington 0

PARKSTON—Wagner dispatched Arlington for one of its three wins at the Parkston Tournament on Saturday, 25-22 and 25-20.

Wagner (4-1): Lizzie Tyler led the way with 13 assists, seven digs and three aces, while Faith Tyler had 14 kills and 10 digs. Emilea Cimpl added 10 assists and seven digs and Abby Brunsing had eight kills and 12 digs.

Arlington (1-3): Marissa Baker had a match-high 17 assists and seven digs and Jayna Haufschild had 10 kills and five digs.

MCM 2, Arlington 0

PARKSTON—McCook Central/Montrose escaped a tough first set against Arlington in the Parkston Tournament before breezing through the second to earn the win, 25-18 and 25-11.

McCook Central/Montrose (3-2): Emily Bies had a huge game, registering 25 assists, while McKennz Kranz had 15 digs and six kills. Aleah Ries also added nine kills and eight digs.

Arlington (1-3): Jeryn Christensen had 12 digs, while Marissa Baker notched nine assists and four digs in the loss.

Wagner 2, MCM 1

PARKSTON—Only one of the 10 round-robin matches in the Parkston Tournament went three sets. Wagner's contest against McCook Central/Montrose went down to the wire, before the former pulled out a 26-24, 17-25 and 27-25 win.

Wagner (4-1): Faith Tyler had a match-high 16 digs and 10 kills and Lizzie Tyler had 12 assists and six digs. Abby Brunsing had 14 digs and eight kills, while Emilea Cimpl had 11 assists.

McCook Central/Montrose (3-2): Emily Bies had a match-high 28 assists and eight digs, while McKenna Kranz had 12 digs and seven kills. Morgan Erikson had eight kills and three blocks, while Abigail VanRuler had seven kills and three blocks.

Chamberlain 3, Mobridge-Pollock 0

MOBRIDGE—Chamberlain opened its season Saturday with a match at Mobridge-Pollock, picking up a three-set win, 25-19, 25-20, 26-24.

Chamberlain (1-0): Avany Long had 12 digs in the win, while Hannah Anderson added eight kills, four blocks and three aces. Mady Handel chipped in four aces and four kills.

Mobridge-Pollock (0-1): Hayley Barah had seven kills on the night, while Caitlyn Claymore dished out 16 assists and Emily Wientjes had nine digs.

Burke 3, Colome 0

BURKE—Burke opened its season with a home tilt against Colome and were able to come away with a win in three sets, 25-7, 26-24 and 25-19.

Burke (1-0): Taylee Indahl led Burke with 14 kills and seven digs, while Bobbi Jo Wischmann had 19 assists and four aces. Lahna Matucha added 11 digs and three aces. Up next: The Cougars play at Winner Tuesday.

Colome (0-1): Kaydee Heath had five kills, four digs and two blocks for the Cowgirls. Makayla Shippty had 12 set assists, while Rayne Hermsen had three kills and three digs. Up next: Colome is at the Gregory Invitational on Saturday.
