Legion baseball roundup: McCook/Miner reaches Region 5B title game

CANOVA—McCook/Miner plated three runs in the fourth inning and edged Humboldt/Hartford by one run, 3-2, in Region 5B tourney play on Friday.

Cole Gassman earned the win, striking out four batters, scattering three hits and giving up two runs (one earned) in 3 1/3 innings. He added two hits and an RBI. Kalub Carmichael had one hit and an RBI. Blake Klinkhammer and Cade Schmitt each finished with one hit apiece.

McCook/Miner plays in the championship game at 4 p.m. on Sunday, with its opponent to be determined.

Wessington Springs 10, Colton 6

CANOVA—Wessington Springs earned a Region 5B tourney victory over Colton on Friday.

Offensively for Wessington springs, Trey Weber knocked in four runs. He also earned the win, giving up seven hits, five earned runs and striking out five batters.

Gunnar Brandenburg and Noah Hainy had two hits each. Sawyer Senska, John Witte, Coy Fastnacht, Isaac Kolousek, Chandler Flowers and Brendin LaBore each had a hit.

Wessington Springs plays Baltic today at 4 p.m.

Baltic 7, Chamberlain 0

CANOVA—Baltic blanked Chamberlain in Region 5B tourney action on Friday.

Chamberlain managed just three hits. Jacob Mutziger, Ruger Forester and Gavin Saxton each had a hit. Cole Hickey took the loss, giving up four hits, six runs (two earned runs) and striking out six batters.

Baltic's Sam Muston mowed down 16 batters and gave up just three hits in the shutout win. Jon Wilhelmsen had two hits.

Baltic plays Wessington Springs at 4 p.m. today.

Region 4B

Platte/Geddes 17, Scotland/Menno 5

TABOR—Platte/Geddes moved into the winner's bracket semifinals at the Region 4B Legion baseball tournament with a 17-5 win over Scotland/Menno on Friday.

Kory Peters knocked in five runs for P/G, while Cole Nachtigal and Carter Fredericksen each batted in three. All three players, plus Riley Hoffman and Riggs Priebe had two hits each. Trevor Sprik was the winning pitcher, striking out four in 2 1/3 innings, while Peters and Seth Kirsch also worked in relief.

For the Tadpoles, Dallas Fuerst had three RBIs, while Trey Bohlman knocked in two. Bohlmann took the loss on the mound.

In the other elimination games, Wagner eliminated Corsica/Stickney 3-2, while Parkston took out Scotland/Menno 17-13.

Today's schedule includes Tabor and Platte/Geddes at 3 p.m. in the winner's bracket semifinals, followed by Wagner and Parkston at 5 p.m. in an elimination game. The Tabor/P-G loser will play the Wagner/Parkston winner at 7 p.m. in another elimination game.

Region 7B

Winner/Colome 10, Bennett County 0

SPEARFISH—Levi McClanahan pitched a five-inning no hitter to help Winner/Colome past Bennett County in the Region 7B Legion baseball tournament's opening round.

McClanahan had seven strikeouts and four walks in the win. Ty Bolton and Dalton Baker each drove in three runs, while Baker, Riley Calhoon, Jackson Kinzer and Carter Brickman each had two hits.

The Royals (12-14) will take on Spearfish in a winner's bracket contest at 3 p.m. today. The loser of that game will play again at 8 p.m.

Spearfish 16, Gregory County 1

SPEARFISH — Parker Louks had a grand slam, as Spearfish took down Gregory County in the Region 7B Legion tournament opener in five innings.

Louks, a Dakota Wesleyan University baseball commit, drove in six runs in the game. Zach Kozel earned the win on the mound and drove in two runs, while striking out nine.

For Gregory County, Aaron Sundquist had the lone RBI. Ridge Oliver had two hits, while Blake Boes took the loss. Hunter Van Nieuwenhuyse and Max Klundt each pitched in relief.

Gregory County faces elimination in a 5:30 p.m. game today against Bennett County.
