Legion baseball roundup: McCook/Miner rolls past Wessington Springs
CANOVA — McCook/Miner's Legion baseball team looked good for the second straight game in the Region 5B baseball tournament Thursday, taking down Wessington Springs 17-2 in a winner's bracket contest.
Cole Gassman drove in three runs, while Sam Arend, Kyle Tuschen, Blake Klinkhammer, Cade Schmitt and Kalub Carmichael each had two RBIs. Tuschen had two hits and scored twice, while Klinkammer and Mitch Kramer both scored two runs. Trent Kingsbury allowed an unearned run and struck out four in two innings of work, while Tuschen pitched three innings for the win in relief, allowing a run and striking out three. M/M finished with just six hits and benefitted from eight walks and four Springs errors.
For Wessington Springs, Sawyer Senska, John Witte and Brendin LaBore each had hits, with Witte recording the only RBI in the game. Witte took the loss, allowing four hits and 12 runs (nine earned).
M/M (19-1) faces Humboldt/Hartford at 6 p.m. today in the winner's bracket semifinals, while Wessington Springs faces Colton at 3:30 p.m. in an elimination game.
Humboldt/Hartford 13, Chamberlain 6
CANOVA—Humboldt/Hartford had a pair of five-run innings to power past Chamberlain in a Region 5B winner's bracket contest Thursday.
Clay Habben drove in three runs for H/H, while Carter Healy and Aaron Mallinger each knocked in a pair of runs. Devin Garry and Carter Healy scored three times each. Broc Haldeman picked up the win in relief, tossing 4 1/3 innings and allowing one hit and no runs.
Chamberlain did all of its damage in a six-run second inning. Jacob Mutziger had two of Chamberlain's three hits and Mutziger, Carson Powers and Remington Rossow each knocked in a run. Max Donovan took the loss, allowing six hits and three earned runs in two innings pitched.
H/H will face McCook/Miner in the winner's bracket semifinals at 6 p.m. today. Chamberlain faces elimination against Baltic at 1 p.m. today.
Platte/Geddes 10, Corsica/Stickney 5
YANKTON—Platte/Geddes picked up a 10-5 win over Corsica/Stickney in the opening round of the Region 4B baseball tournament on Thursday.
Offensively, Seth Kirsch belted a two-run homer in the fourth innings for Platte/Geddes, extending its lead to 8-3. Kirsch finished with two hits.
Dylan Mohnen had two hits and two RBIs. Riley Hoffman, Cole Nachtigal and Chandler Frederickson each added a hit. Hoffman drove in two runs, while Nachtigal added an RBI.
Chase Pheifer earned the win, pitching three innings, allowing two hits, three runs (two earned) and striking out three batters.
For Corsica/Stickney, Jacob Joachim smacked a two-run homer in the first inning. Bryce Plamp went 3-for-4, while Caysen Eide, Hunter Johnson, Austin Graves, Gavin Zomer and Jake Clark each had a hit. Graves and Johnson added an RBI apiece. Eide took the loss. He lasted 3 1/3 innings, scattered seven hits, gave up eight runs (six earned) and finished with zero strikeouts.
Platte/Geddes plays Scotland/Menno at 3 p.m. today in Tabor.
Tabor 17, Wagner 2
YANKTON — Tabor pounded out 16 hits en route to a convincing victory over Wagner in the second round of the Region 4B baseball tournament on Thursday.
Eight different players recorded a hit in the offensive explosion for Tabor, which scored 11 runs in the fourth inning.
Bryce Scieszinski and Joey Slama both had three hits and three RBIs. Tanner VanDriel and Sam Caba both had two hits, while Mace Merkwan, Beau Rothschadl and Colin Adams had one hit apiece. Merkwan, VanDriel, Caba, Uecker and Colin Adams all drove in a run.
Zach Cuka earned the win, pitching three innings, giving up one hit, one earned run and striking out four batters.
For Wagner, Brycen Zephier and Alex Sully each had a hit. Sully's hit was a two-run single. Mato Perry was tagged with the loss. He pitched three innings, scattered seven hits, gave up six runs (two earned) and fanned three batters.
Tabor 10, Parkston 0
YANKTON — A combined six-hit shutout helped Tabor to an opening-round, six-inning win at the Region 4B Legion baseball tournament Thursday over Parkston.
Bryce Scieszinski, Josh Schmidt and Tanner VanDriel combined to strike out 14 batters and keep Parkston off the board in the victory. Scieszinski, pitching 2 2/3 innings, allowed three hits and struck out six for the win. VanDriel had eight strikeouts in three innings of relief.
On offense, Scieszinski and Mace Merkwan each had home runs and knocked in three runs. Merkwan finished with three runs scored, while Christian Uecker added two hits. Colin Adams scored twice as the Bluebirds had five runs in the sixth inning to put the game away.
For Parkston, Craig Lasley and Brady Albrecht each had two hits, while Nathan Doering and Alex Scott had doubles. Doering took the loss, allowing four hits and five runs (one earned) in four innings. Parkston had six errors in the loss.
Tabor (17-4) will now await the winner of Platte/Geddes and Scotland/Menno at 3 p.m. Saturday in Tabor. Parkston will face Wagner in an elimination game at 7 p.m. today.
