Amateur baseball roundup: Winner/Colome snaps Alexandria's 28-game winning streak

WINNER—Connor Hopkins fanned 15 batters and pitched a no-hitter as Winner/Colome edged Alexandria 1-0 in a Sunshine League amateur baseball game on Thursday. The Pheasants snapped the Angels' 28-game winning streak, which dates back to May 26, 2017 when Winner/Colome also defeated Alexandria, 5-4.

Two weeks after Winner/Colome gave up 12 runs against the Angels, Hopkins kept them off the board at Leahy Bowl.

In the fifth inning, Zach Harter scored the go-ahead run on a Trever Vermeulen wild pitch. Vermeulen struck out eight batters.

Offensively, Harter had a double, Austin Richey recorded two hits and Austin Calhoon had a double.

Winner/Colome (6-1, 4-1) plays Corsica-Stickney on Sunday in Corsica. Alexandria (7-1, 5-1) hosts Parkston on Tuesday.

Dimock-Emery 9, Wagner 1

EMERY—Phil Johnson struck out 13 batters and Jared Schmidt crushed a two-run homer to propel the Dimock-Emery Raptors to a Sunshine League amateur baseball victory over the Wagner Rockets on Thursday.

Johnson scattered four hits and gave up one earned run. Schmidt had two hits, as did Jason Schmidt, Gene Kitchens and Doug Sudbeck.

For Wagner, Derek Soukup had two hits, a double and an RBI. Drue Soukup took the loss for the Rockets.

Dimock-Emery (5-7, 1-4) plays at Platte on Sunday. Wagner (0-5, 0-5) hosts Mount Vernon on Sunday.

Plankinton 3, Chamberlain 2

CHAMBERLAIN—Plankinton was able to stave off Chamberlain's late comeback on Thursday to win a Pony Hills League amateur baseball game. Plankinton scored all three of its runs in the third, while Chamberlain had a two-run eighth. Each team had six hits.

Tyler Waddle led Plankinton at the plate with a pair of hits and also added an RBI. Trevor Salmonson drove in two runs on his third-inning single. Deion Waddle, Chris Hill and Tom Harris each had a hit, too. Travis Gant earned the win thanks to seven shutout innings, which he didn't allow a run on six hits and seven strikeouts. Deion and Tyler Waddle didn't allow a hit in the final two innings, though Chamberlain did score two runs against them.

For Chamberlain, Ryan Schoenhard and Kyle Forester each had two hits, while Jake Bryme and Evan Fleury each added a hit. Mike Schwartz threw 117 pitches in a complete game effort. He struck out 10 batters and allowed six hits and three runs.

Plankinton (4-3, 3-1) plays at Miller on Sunday. Chamberlain (1-3) plays at South Central on Sunday.

Miller 5, Four Corners 2

MILLER—Cody Cotton mowed down 14 batters to lift the Miller Outlaws to a Pony Hills League victory over Four Corners on Thursday.

Cotton scattered five hits and gave up two runs (one earned) in the complete game performance.

Offensively, Casey Schlechter had two hits and drove in two runs.

J.D. Farley and Justin Lester each had a hit and an RBI for Four Corners. Adam Kaus took the loss after striking out nine batters, scattering seven hits and allowing five earned runs.

Miller hosts Plankinton on Sunday. Four Corners hosts Kimball/White Lake on Sunday.
