Catching up with former area athletes: Nelson sees time in SDSU spring game
South Dakota State University redshirt freshman quarterback Kanin Nelson split time with starting quarterback Taryn Christion and led the Blue team over the White team 40-17 during the Jackrabbits' spring game on Friday in Brookings.
Nelson, who is battling for SDSU's backup quarterback spot, finished the contest 4-of-7 for 18 yards and one touchdown. Christion went 9-of-17 for 160 yards and two touchdowns. The former Mitchell Kernel standout hasn't seen the field for SDSU in his two seasons with the team.
SDSU starts fall camp in late July and will open the 2018 season against Iowa State on Sept. 1 in Ames, Iowa.
Lickteig, Wyoming tie for fifth place in Mountain West Championship
University of Wyoming senior golfer Arron Lickteig helped the Cowboys place fifth at the Mountain West Championship on Sunday in Bremerton, Washington. Wyoming finished with a three-round team score of 882, which was the team's best finish ever in the Mountain West Conference.
Lickteig, a Freeman graduate, tied for 37th place finishing with a three-round score of 228 (76, 75, 77).
The Cowboys will wait for the NCAA selection announcement on May 2 to find out if their season will continue at the NCAA Championships.
Bormann, SDSU take third in Summit League Championship
The South Dakota State University women's golf team took third place at the Summit League Championship on Tuesday at Arbor Links in Nebraska City, Nebraska. After finishing in fifth place after the first round, SDSU moved up to fourth place after the second round and finished third with a team score of 904.
SDSU's Sydney Bormann tied for 28th place with a three-round score of 241 (78, 79, 84). Bormann, a former Parkston standout, finished her sophomore season with an average round score of 76.39, which was third-best for the Jackrabbits. She also had two top-10 finishes including winning the Lady Thunderbird Invite on March 16 in St. George, Utah.
