Mustangs' buzzer beater sinks DWU men

SIOUX CITY, Iowa—Tyler Borchers' buzzer beater stunned Dakota Wesleyan University and lifted Morningside College to a men's basketball victory 84-83 on Wednesday.

The No. 19 Tigers dropped a heartbreaker to the No. 10 Mustangs, who trailed for the final 30 minutes of the game until Borchers' shot gave them the lead that mattered most. DWU falls to 19-9 overall and 9-7 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

The Tigers built a 13-point lead and their advantage hovered around 10 points for most of the second half. They led 83-75 with 1 minute and 33 seconds left, but went scoreless the rest of the way.

Brody Egger hit a layup to make it 83-82 with 10 seconds left and DWU's Ty Hoglund was fouled on the inbound pass. Hoglund, who finished with 24 points, missed the front end of the bonus free throw and the Mustangs corralled the rebound.

With no timeouts, Morningside raced the ball up the court and it found Borchers, who made the shot in the middle of the lane as time expired.

Jason Spicer led the Tigers with 26 points and 10 assists, while Nygel Drury added 11 points. Collin Kramer scored six points and had 13 rebounds for DWU, which led 47-42 at halftime.

The Tigers lead was stretched to 65-52 with 13:22 left, but they couldn't hang on down the stretch.

Egger added 20 points and Zach Imig scored 19. Borchers finished with 15 points.

DWU remains in fourth place in the GPAC standings and is two games ahead of Hastings College, which lost to Doane University 80-71 on Wednesday.
