Kernels capture ESD gymnastics title

ABERDEEN—The Mitchell gymnastics team crossed off one of its season goals on Saturday.

The Kernels won the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet for the sixth time in Audra Rew's 12-year coaching tenure with the team.

"It's always a goal to win the ESD," Rew said. "It's very prestigious and our conference has a lot of pride and it's very exciting when you can come away with a win."

Mitchell slipped past ESD rival Watertown in the team standings at Aberdeen Central's Golden Eagles Arena. The Kernels finished with 146.250 points, while the Arrows had 145.875.

The Kernels placed six of the top 10 in the balance beam. Rew said that set the stage for the rest of the day.

"It kind of just set the tone for the rest of the meet," Rew said. "We were about doing our job and each routine we focus on what each kid can do. We don't look at scores. We don't look at what the competitors are doing. We just do our job and we know if we do our job in the end, things are going to turnout our way."

Maria Krall placed second in the beam with 9.400 points. She also placed second in the all-around (37.475).

"She just put together a really solid meet for us, which gets her a ton of confidence going into the state meet next week," Rew said.

The Kernels also received a boost from Kailee Henglefelt and Alyssa Hughes in the beam. Henglefelt (9.100) and Hughes (9.025) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

"They both are new to the beam lineup and they both placed in the top five on beam," Rew said. "So that was great to see."

Rew added the result can give the Kernels a nice shot of confidence entering the state meet, which is Feb. 9-10 in Watertown.

"We needed a competition," Rew said. "I didn't take some of our top varsity to our last meet and I think they just needed a competition to kind of build their confidence. You can only practice so much sometimes. So it was good to get out on the floor, compete and feel good about ourselves."
