MVP boys edge Mitchell Christian

Leading by one point after the third quarter, the Mitchell Christian boys basketball team couldn't close out on a victory on Tuesday.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton scored 18 points in the final frame to rally past their Custer Battlefield Highway Conference rivals and earn a 54-52 win at Baas Auditorium on Tuesday.

"I'm proud of the fight we showed," Mitchell Christian coach Jesse Tolsma said. "We knew that good defense would allow us to be in the game and that's what we did for most of the night. (MVP) had a short stretch where they were able to get it going a little bit."

MVP was paced by Kyle Glanzer's 17 points, while Dane Rihanek and Kaden Karst each scored 11. For the Golden Eagles, Alec Nelson had 15 points, with 11 from Christian Cooper and eight each from Riley O'Neill and Ty Vander Pol.

"We've got a great group of guys and they're hungry," Tolsma said. "They're hungry to correct those errors and find ways to win games. We just have to keep working to come out on the right end."

Mitchell Christian shot 58 percent in the loss but had 22 turnovers. Mount Vernon/Plankinton (8-5) hosts Dell Rapids on Tuesday in Mount Vernon. Mitchell Christian (4-10) will travel to Sunshine Bible Academy Monday for a contest with the Crusaders.

Titan girls power past Golden Eagles

Camie Walz scored a game-high 18 points and Katlyn Briggs added 14 points as Mount Vernon/Plankinton powered past Mitchell Christian 44-17 on Tuesday.

MVP led 10-4 after one quarter and 22-9 at halftime.

"They did a great job of overpowering us," MCS assistant coach Mark Miedema said. "We were just over matched and too slow with our help."

Staci Wolbrink had six points to lead the Golden Eagles.

"Our girls did a good job moving the ball," Miedema said. "We just didn't finish."

MVP plays Hanson on Thursday in Alexandria, while MCS plays at Sunshine Bible Academy on Monday.
