Tiger men start Florida trip with a win

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—A team effort trumped a dominating individual performance on Tuesday.

The No. 20 Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 76-60 win over Keiser University at the Marietta Rappaport Holiday Classic in West Palm Beach, Florida.

DWU's Ty Hoglund scored 24 points on 9-for-17 shooting from the field. Trae Vandeberg added 13 points and Samuel McCloud scored 12 points off the bench.

Keiser's 6-foot-10 Deion McClenton gave DWU fits and finished with 30 points on 15-for-22 shooting from the floor. He added nine rebounds, three blocked shots and DWU coach Matt Wilber said around five or six dunks.

But after McClenton's 30 points, no other Seahawk scored in double figures.

"We were doing such a good job on the rest of their guys," Wilber said. "We weren't going to change our defensive strategy because our guards were doing such a good job on their guards."

The Tigers built a 34-27 halftime lead and stretched their advantage to 21 points late in the contest.

"After halftime, I just thought our guys did a really good job offensively, of moving the ball," Wilber said. "We had some really good looks. They were pressing and trapping and kind of getting after it defensively. We took care of it and guys really knocked down some shots."

DWU nailed 11 3-pointers, with Hoglund and McCloud both hitting four apiece. McCloud stretched the floor from the center position, while power forward Collin Kramer impacted the game in a variety of ways. He finished with seven points, seven assists, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

"I thought (McCloud) and Collin did a really good job inside on the glass and being productive offensively for us," Wilber said.

The Tigers will play Johnson and Wales University of Miami at 2 p.m. Central time today in the Marietta Rappaport Holiday Classic.
