Area basketball roundup: Hanson girls upset No. 4 Avon

Hanson shook off a slow start to upset No. 4 Avon in girls basketball action on Monday at the Corn Palace. The Beavers, who fell behind 7-0 early, handed the Pirates a 57-51 defeat.

Hanson (3-1): Jada Campbell powered the Beavers with 21 points and seven rebounds. Megan Guericke added 11 points, while Brooke Weber had seven rebounds points and four assists. Heather Kayser also dished out four assists. Up next: Hanson plays Viborg-Hurley on Friday in Hurley.

Avon (2-2): Cheylee Nagel paced the Pirates with 20 points, four rebounds and four steals. Lauren Sees contributed 10 points, eight assists and four rebounds. Olivia Jurrens scored 10. Up next: Avon hosts Colome on Thursday.

Menno remained perfect on the season after knocking off Iroquois in girls basketball action on Monday at the Corn Palace.

Menno (4-0): Paige Heckenlaible and Kiara Nusz paced the Wolves with 11 points apiece. Nusz collected nine rebounds. Morgan Edelman scored 10 points. Ashton Vaith added nine points and four steals for Menno, which shot 49 percent from the field. Up next: Menno hosts Howard on Thursday.

CORSICA—Three players scored 10 points apiece to lift Corsica-Stickney to a girls basketball win over Wessington Springs on Monday in Corsica.

Corsica-Stickney (4-1): Courtney Menning, Raven Barse and Rachel Gerlach all scored 10 points each in the win. Menning added five assists and Haley Johnson hauled in eight rebounds. Up next: Corsica-Stickney hosts Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Thursday.

Wessington Springs (0-3): Grace Gran led Wessington Springs 13 points and five rebounds. Up next: Wessington Springs hosts Highmore-Harrold on Dec. 29.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour (1-1): Kianna Payer had 14 points, while Mattilynn Reiner had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Nighthawks, who picked up five steals from Erica Koster. Up next: TDA hosts Freeman Academy/Marion today in Tripp.

CORSICA—Corsica-Stickney jumped out to a 19-5 first-quarter lead against Wessington Springs and coasted to a boys basketball win on Monday in Corsica.

Corsica-Stickney (3-0): Bryce Plamp powered the Jaguars with 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Cordel Menning notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Caysen Eide added 12 points, while Jaden Barse had nine points and six rebounds. The Jaguars outrebounded the Spartans 41-17. Up next: Corsica-Stickney hosts Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Thursday in Corsica.
