YANKTON — The Mitchell High School gymnastics team started its season strong, winning the Yankton Triangular on Monday in Yankton.

Mitchell recorded a team score of 142.8 to win the event, while Yankton placed second (127.1), Parkston/Ethan/Hanson finished third (114.75) and Montrose took fourth (34.0). The Kernels scored 35.15 in bars, 36.3 in beam, 35.35 in floor and 36.0 in vault.

"I was really happy to see all of the young kids out there performing and looking pretty good," MHS head coach Audra Rew said. "It answered a lot of questions for us. It's just going to be a puzzle piece all season long to see how we can get the highest scores."

Individually, Maria Krall was the all-around champion, recording a score of 36.75, while winning both the bars (9.2) and beam (9.45). Eighth-grader Gracie Czmowski placed second with a score of 35.7 and won the floor competition (9.3). Seventh-grader Kaylee Bauder took third (34.85), freshman Masy Mock finished fourth (34.6) and Bailey Roden placed sixth (33.35).

Rew said she liked what she saw from the Kernels on the vault and bars, adding they were debuting some tougher routines.

"I'm really proud that the kids pushed through and did all of their hard difficult routines," Rew said. "Some things went well, some things went OK, but I think it'll give them confidence to complete it better on Saturday."

Montrose's Jocelyn Krouse placed fourth all-around with a score of 34.0, while McKenzie Prunty led Parkston/Ethan/Hanson with a seventh-place finish (33.3).

Mitchell competes at the Lolly Forseth Invitational on Saturday at Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls.
