Marlins close weekend with a win

The Mitchell Marlins girls hockey team finished the weekend with one of each result during a three-game homestand at the Mitchell Activities Center.

The Marlins tied the Watertown Lakers 4-4 on Saturday, before pounding the Lakers 6-1 Sunday for the team's first win of the season. That came on the heels of a 6-3 loss to Sioux Falls late Friday.

On Sunday, Jenna Grosdidier had a pair of first-period goals and scored a hat trick to help Mitchell build a 6-0 lead. Ashley Jones had a pair of goals and Kyla Konfrst netted a goal to put the Marlins into a commanding lead. Jones added an assist for a three-point game and Kelsey Amick had an assist. Katelyn Uithoven stopped 23 shots for her first win of the season and Mitchell outshot Watertown 29-24.

The Marlins had a 2-0 lead in Saturday's contest and Isabel Bathke's goal less than 6 minutes into the third period had the Marlins with a 4-3 lead but Watertown later equalized and the two teams skated to a tie after overtime.

Jones, Amick and Grosdidier each had goals in the tie and Amick had a three-point game with two assists. Jones, Shannen Koch and Maggie Dailey each had assists. Uithoven faced 50 shots, making 46 saves, as Watertown outshot Mitchell 50-23, including 31-10 through two periods.

In Friday's game, former Marlin Grace Halverson had four goals for Sioux Falls. Jones, Amick and Grosdidier each scored in the contest for Mitchell, and Grosdidier and Amick each had assists. Uithoven had 24 saves in the loss for Mitchell.

Mitchell (1-1-1) — which doesn't play a road game until Jan. 6 — hosts Oahe at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Mitchell Activities Center.
