State volleyball roundup: Harrisburg outlasts Watertown to advance to title match
RAPID CITY — Defending Class AA state champion Harrisburg survived a scare from fifth-seeded Watertown, beating the Arrows 3-2 in the semifinals to advance to the state championship match. Set scores were 25-11, 24-26, 25-11, 23-25 and 15-12.
Madison Wassink led the Tigers with 17 kills, 12 digs and three blocks while Meghan Krul added 14 kills, five blocks and one ace. Avery Thorson recorded 40 assists and seven kills and Ashlee Cain chipped in 14 digs and three aces.
Watertown was led by McKenzie Buisker's nine kills and four blocks, while Taylor Corey recorded 22 digs in the loss.
Aberdeen Central 3, Sioux Falls O'Gorman 0: Aberdeen Central swept Sioux Falls O'Gorman 25-19, 26-24 and 25-15 in state consolation action on Friday. Brooklyn Kusler and Cassidy Gough put down 11 kills for the Golden Eagles (17-6). Haylee Mork had 35 assists and 10 digs. For Sioux Falls O'Gorman (20-15), Emma Ronsiek had 11 kills and 18 digs. McKenzie Hermanson added 12 assists.
Sioux Valley 3, Parker 2: Sioux Valley outlasted Parker 3-2 in a consolation match on Friday. The Cossacks won the marathon match 25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 25-15 and 15-10. Nikole Ziegler powered Sioux Valley (26-5) with 24 kills and 18 digs. Lynsey Stevens had 20 kills and 13 digs. Rachel Miller dished out 57 assists. For Parker (25-8), Hannah Viet had 21 kills and Grace Leberman had 18 kills and 16 digs. Hannah Even dished out 49 assists and Brianna Berens had 17 digs.
Sioux Falls Christian 3, Madison 0: Ellie Voss recorded a match-high 16 kills as Sioux Falls Christian rolled pass Madison 25-20, 25-16 and 25-19 in a Class A semifinal match on Friday.
Kylee Van Egdom added 10 kills and two aces, Emma Dorhout finished with 15 digs and five kills and Samantha Fykstra had 37 assists for the Chargers.
For Madison, Olivia Rud had six kills and three blocks, while Jessi Giles finished with 11 digs.
Dakota Valley 3, Belle Fourche 0: Dakota Valley advanced the Class A title match by defeating Belle Fourche 3-0 on Friday. Set scores were 25-15 25-17 and 25-15. The Panthers will face the Chargers tonight in the championship match at 7 p.m. in Rapid City.
Northwestern 3, Herreid-Selby Area 0: The top-seeded Wildcats will have the chance to defend their state title today, after a 25-12, 25-9, 25-16 victory over the upstart Wolverines. Riley Grandpre had 15 kills, joined by Evy Peterson and Caitlyn Fischbach with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Madalyn Groft added 38 set assists in the win for Northwestern (34-1). Charlie Tisdall had five kills for Herreid/Selby Area (30-3), which had only 12 kills as a team.
Warner 3, Chester Area 1: Despite falling to Chester Area in the first set, Warner rallied to win the next three sets and advance to the the Class B state title match against rival Northwestern.
Set scores were 21-25, 25-14, 25-13 and 25-16.
