Sioux Falls tabbed to host NAIA men’s basketball tournament

Pierre edges Harrisburg for Class 11AA title

VERMILLION — Casey Williams hit a 31-yard field goal with less than 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter to push Pierre past Harrisburg 24-21 in the Class 11AA state championship game Friday night at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.

Pierre fell behind 14-0 and trailed 21-7 at halftime, but the Governors outscored the Tigers 10-0 in the fourth quarter to rally for their second state title. Harrisburg outgained Pierre 373-215, picked up 19 first downs compared to Pierre's six, but the Tigers committed four turnovers and Pierre finished with three.

Pierre (9-3) wide receiver Mike Lusk was named the Joe Robbie MVP. Lusk hauled in two catches for 85 yards and two touchdowns, while Garrett Stout had three catches for 79 yards and Gage Gehring added six catches for 17 yards. Quarterback Peyton Zabel went 13-of-22 passing for 196 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Harrisburg racked up 195 rushing yards and 178 passing yards, led by Hunter Headlee, who completed 9 of 20 passes for 178 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Headlee added 25 carries for 67 yards and Jack Anderson recorded 82 yards and one touchdown. Brooks Fuller had four catches for 99 yards. The Tigers (7-5) fell in the state championship game for the second season in a row.
