Catching up with former area athletes: SDSU's Kocer ranked 11th in preseason ratings

South Dakota State University senior wrestler and Wagner graduate David Kocer is ranked No. 11 in the 174-pound weight class in preseason rankings conducted by FloWrestling.org.

Kocer made his second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division I Championships this past spring, finishing the 2016-17 season with a 24-10 record. Through his first three seasons with the Jackrabbits, Kocer has compiled an 80-43 career mark.

SDSU is scheduled to open the 2017-18 season by hosting the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open Nov. 5 at Frost Arena.

Cooney records fifth career top-10 finish

Pickstown native J.J. Cooney helped the University of Sioux Falls men's golf team to a runner-up finish at the Bemidji State Invitational on Tuesday.

The Cougars started the final round in third place, just one shot behind the teams tied for the lead. After a six-over-par round on Monday, Sioux Falls finished with an 11-over 587 (293-294), placing them second.

Cooney recorded his fifth career top-10 finish, tying for ninth. He carded a two-over 74 in his second round, dropping him one spot to T9 for the tournament at 145 (71-74), one over par.

The Cougars travel to Lake City, Minnesota, for the J.R. Watking Invite on Sept. 25-26 at The Jewel Golf Course.

Kinneberg helps Mount Marty golf take third

Parkston grad Ty Kinneberg helped the Mount Marty men's golf team finish third out of 12 teams at the Morningside Fall Invite in Sioux City, Iowa, on Monday.

Kinneberg carded an 81 and finished tied for 12th at the invite. The Lancers shot a 329 as a team to earn third place. Morningside College won with a 300 and Dakota Wesleyan finished second with a 324.
