Kernels sweep Pierre to improve to 10-0
PIERRE — Mitchell moved its season-opening win streak to 10 straight matches Tuesday, sweeping Pierre on Tuesday in three sets during an Eastern South Dakota Conference volleyball match. Set scores were 25-13, 25-16 and 25-13 in favor of the No. 2-ranked Kernels.
"I thought we served pretty aggressively and that helped get us going," Mitchell coach Deb Thill said. "Later in the match, we won a lot of the long rallies and we kept attacking the ball. Overall, we played pretty well and for us, it's a big road win."
Mitchell was led by a pair of double-doubles, with Chelsea Brewster picking up 12 kills and 15 digs, while Mackenzie Miller had 11 kills and 18 digs. Carly Haring had eight kills and five blocks and Mandy Schmidt had 32 assists and nine digs. Sage Jorgensen had a match-high five aces and 10 digs and Brewster added four aces.
Thill commended the effort of Jorgensen, Lesley VanDrongelen and Brooke Flemmer, as the trio filled in for Bridget Thill, who was sidelined from the contest by illness.
Pierre (3-6, 1-2 ESD) was paced by Erika Stout's nine kills. Emry Heiss and Coyley Bush each had three blocks and Halle Gronlund had 10 digs for the Govs, who host Huron Thursday.
