Mitchell girls tennis team tops Sioux Falls Washington
SIOUX FALLS—The Mitchell High School girls tennis team topped Sioux Falls Washington 8-1 in a dual on Thursday in Sioux Falls.
Mitchell won all six singles matches and only dropped one doubles match to the Warriors.
In singles, Sammy Pooley earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory in Flight 1, while Avery Larson remained unbeaten at Flight 2 with a 6-3, 6-3 win. Kelsey Dahme cruised in her Flight 3 match, winning 6-0, 6-2 and Ashley Jones held on for a 6-1, 7-5 win in Flight 4. In Flight 5, Sarah Zimmerman won 6-4, 6-1 and Kiersten Bathke won 6-0, 6-0 in Flight 6.
"We played singles really well and struggled a little bit in doubles," MHS head coach Pat Moller said. "Anytime you can go to Sioux Falls and compete with the big schools and come away with a win, it's a positive."
In doubles action, Pooley/Larson needed a tiebreaker in set two for a win in Flight 1 6-1, 7-6(4), while Dahme/Jones fell to Katelyn Nesheim and Taylor Olson 6-1, 6-2 in Flight 2. Zimmerman and Madison Bohlen won Flight 3 doubles 6-0, 6-1.
"In Flight 1 doubles we were in cruise control and then they made the adjustment. We maintained, kept our composure and came out on top in the end," Moller said. "In Flight 2 doubles, we just had a bad night. We started out flat, dug a hole early and never recovered."
Mitchell takes on Sioux Falls Roosevelt in a dual on Monday at Hitchcock Park.
