Area volleyball roundup: Rustlers earn sweep at MVP

PLANKINTON—Ethan overcame a 24-21 first-set deficit and went onto sweep Mount Vernon/Plankinton in straight sets on Tuesday in Plankinton. Set scores were 26-24, 25-18 and 25-10.

Karly Gustafson led the Rustlers with 13 kills and three blocks. Jessica Bartscher recorded 30 assists and three aces. Maddie Miiller finished with 11 digs.

Destiney Haak led Mount Vernon/Plankinton with six kills. Reagan Klooz had 10 assists and Camie Walz finished with 11 digs.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton won the junior varsity match 2-1.

Ethan (4-2) will play at Menno on Thursday. Mount Vernon/Plankinton (2-1) will host Hanson on Thursday in Mount Vernon.

Hanson 3, Howard 0

ALEXANDRIA—Hanson remained perfect on the season with a 3-0 win over Howard in prep volleyball action on Tuesday in Alexandria. Set scores were 25-14, 25-17 and 25-11.

Brookelyn Slaba led the Beavers with 12 kills. Allison Bahmuller put down 10 kills and a block in the win. Brookelyn Weber and Jada Campbell both added eight kills, with Weber adding 12 digs and two aces. Heather Kayser dished out 38 assists. Morgan Trabing recorded 12 digs.

Citori Rentz led Howard with eight kills. Lily Mead added eight blocks and two kills. Jessica Burghardt recorded three blocks. Cailey Hinker registered 26 digs and two aces for the Tigers. Audrey Ruml added 10 digs.

Hanson won the junior varsity match (25-17, 25-17) and the freshman match (25-14, 25-17).

Hanson (6-0) will play Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Thursday in Mount Vernon. Howard (2-3) will play McCook Central/Montrose on Thursday in Howard.

Freeman 3, Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 0

FORESTBURG—Freeman swept Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in prep volleyball action on Tuesday in Forestburg. Set scores were 25-19, 25-21 and 25-17.

Emily Miller led the Flyers with 10 kills and Josie Fuhrmann added 25 assists. Karli Maske recorded six aces and Hannah Eberts added four blocks. Ashley Glanzer contributed 21 digs.

For SCW, Tesa Jensen had seven kills, two blocks and two aces. Abby Doering recorded seven kills. Erica Howard finished with four kills and two aces. Tristan Ziebart added 18 assists and Sarah Morgan had 10 digs.

Freeman (3-1) will host Gayville-Volin on Thursday in Freeman. Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (3-3) will play Mitchell Christian on Thursday in Mitchell.

Wagner 3, Platte-Geddes 0

PLATTE — Wagner earned a three-set sweep of Platte-Geddes in a prep volleyball match Tuesday, winning 25-13, 25-12 and 25-19.

For the Red Raiders, Abby Brunsing had 12 kills and five digs, while Sierra Juffer had 28 assists, six digs and two aces. Maesa Dvorak had four kills, one block, five digs and six aces.

Platte-Geddes was led by Tori Weins, who had four kills and one block. Courtney Neuman had 12 assists and five digs and Hailey Wagner had two kills, two blocks and four digs.

Wagner (5-2) plays at Gregory on Thursday. P-G (1-4) plays at Bon Homme on Thursday.

Avon 3, Tripp-Delmont/Armour 0

TRIPP — Avon picked up a three-set prep volleyball sweep Tuesday night over host Tripp-Delmont/Armour. Set scores were 25-17, 25-17 and 25-14.

For the Pirates, Taylor Hamilton had five aces. Cheylee Nagel had 12 kills, three aces and nine digs, while Lauren Sees had 17 digs and four aces. Kacie Mudder added 13 digs for Avon and Hanna VanGerpen had 21 set assists.

TDA picked up six kills from Kianna Payer, with Alyssa Whitney adding 12 set assists and Brianna Stoebner recording 10 digs.

Avon (3-1) plays at Alcester-Hudson on Thursday. TDA (0-4) hosts Kimball/White Lake on Thursday in Armour.

Mitchell Christian 3, Wessington Springs 0

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Mitchell Christian improved to 2-0 on the season with a three-set sweep at Wessington Springs in prep volleyball play Tuesday. Set scores were 25-14, 25-17 and 25-19.

Grace Garrels, Adeline Grant and Maggie Reynen each had three aces and Erica Thompson had eight assists. Reynen and Charlotte Haag added three kills and Katelyn Karhoff added 14 digs.

For the Spartans (1-1), Maddie Neely had eight kills and Sierra Swenson had 13 digs.

Mitchell Christian hosts Sanborn Central/Woonsocket on Thursday, while Wessington Springs takes on Gregory on Saturday.

Andes Cent./Dakota Christian 3, Parkston 0

NEW HOLLAND — Megan Mudder had 10 kills, 17 digs and two aces to lead Andes Central/Dakota Christian to a three-set prep volleyball victory Tuesday night over Parkston. Set scores were 25-23, 25-21 and 25-23.

Taylor Gray had 23 set assists, nine digs and two aces, while Brianna Deurmier added 20 digs and two aces, while Mackenzie Muckey had five blocks and Beulah Black Cloud put down seven kills and had 19 digs.

For the Trojans, Brenna Walz and Paige Semmler each had six kills, with three blocks and two aces from Semmler and three aces from Walz. Lauren Reiner had three aces and Faith Rands had 44 digs.

AC/DC (5-1) hosts Sunshine Bible Academy on Thursday in New Holland, while Parkston (2-6) plays at Corsica-Stickney on Tuesday in Corsica.

Burke/South Central 3, Chamberlain 0

CHAMBERLAIN — Burke/South Central swept Chamberlain 3-0 in prep volleyball play Tuesday. Set scores were 25-15, 25-12 and 25-17.

Lahna Matucha had nine aces and eight kills and 10 digs to pace the Cougars and Tressa Bull had six kills and five blocks. Bobbi Jo Wischmann had 20 assists and 10 digs and Ryahna Schweigert added 15 digs.

For the Cubs, Mady Handel had two aces and three blocks. McKenzie Sorensen had three kills, two aces and 10 digs.

B/SC (3-0) hosts O'Neill, Neb. on Thursday in Bonesteel. Chamberlain (1-3) plays at Crow Creek on Thursday.

Gayville-Volin 3, Scotland 0

SCOTLAND—Gayville-Volin downed Scotland 3-0 in a prep volleyball match on Tuesday in Scotland. Set scores were 25-17, 25-15 and 25-16.

Taylor Bietz led Scotland with 24 assists and 10 digs. Bella Vitek and Taylor Gall both had eight kills. Gall added 11 digs. Kelsi Nooney contributed 10 digs.

For Gayville-Volin, Abby Larson recorded 15 assists. Lanny Clark added nine kills and nine digs. Kayla VanOsdel added seven kills and Molly Larson added 11 digs.

Scotland (1-3) will host Freeman Academy/Marion on Thursday. Gayville-Volin (2-4) will play at Freeman on Thursday.

Lyman 3, Colome 1

COLOME — Lyman earned a road prep volleyball victory Tuesday, topping Colome in four sets. Set scores were 25-22, 25-16, 19-25 and 25-23.

Kayt Garnos had eight solo blocks and five kills, while Kacie Wagner had seven aces for Lyman. Jacey Miller had 25 digs and Kadi Terca had 18 assist and three aces.

For Colome, Alexa McKenzie had 18 digs, while Kaydee Heath had eight kills and five blocks and Makayla Shippy had 21 assists.

Lyman (4-3) will play at New Underwood Thursday. Colome (1-4) plays at Jones County Thursday.

Wolsey-Wessington 3, Corsica-Stickney 0

STICKNEY—Wolsey-Wessington swept Corsica-Stickney in straight sets during a prep volleyball match on Tuesday in Stickney. Set scores were 25-13, 29-27 and 25-20.

Chantel Haider led Wolsey-Wessington with nine kills and two digs. Shayla Muilenburg added 10 assists, seven kills and six aces.

Courtney Menning led Corsica-Stickney with five kills, four blocks, three digs and one ace. Heather Johnson added two kills and one block. Raven Barse recorded two blocks and Kassidy Clark had nine assists.

Corsica-Stickney (1-5) will play at James Valley Christian on Thursday in Huron. Wolsey-Wessington (1-1) will host Hitchcock-Tulare on Thursday in Wolsey.

Vermillion 3, Bon Homme 1

VERMILLION — Vermillion dropped the first set but rallied to knock off Bon Homme in four sets Tuesday in prep volleyball action, winning 23-25, 25-18, 25-14 and 25-20.

Ciera Himes had eight kills and 13 digs, while Jenae Alberts had 13 digs. Emily Cap had 17 digs and two aces and Johanna Jelsma had 21 assists for the Cavaliers.

No stats were reported for Vermillion, which improved to 2-4 overall. Bon Homme, which won the JV game, is now 0-4 and will host Platte-Geddes on Thursday.

McCook Central/Montrose 3, Sioux Valley 2

MONTROSE — McCook Central/Montrose held on for a five-set victory in high school volleyball Tuesday, knocking off Sioux Valley.

Morgan Koepsell had 15 kills and seven blocks, while McKenna Kranz had 14 kills, 16 digs and three aces. Hayley Miles had 23 assists and two aces, with Aleah Ries and Jacy Pulse each adding eight kills. Emily Bies had 22 assists and three aces, as well for MCM.

For the Cossacks (3-2), Nikole Ziegler had 25 kills and 14 digs and Rachel Miller added 41 assists.

MCM (4-4) will play Howard in the Big East Conference Tournament in Flandreau on Thursday.

Winner 3, Bennett County 0

WINNER—Winner swept Bennett County in prep volleyball action on Tuesday in Winner. Set scores were 25-10, 25-12 and 25-15.

Morgan Hammerbeck led the Warriors with 12 digs, nine kills, seven aces and one block. Sam Marts added six kills, three digs, three aces and two blocks. Abby Marts recorded 12 digs and five kills. Gracie Littau contributed 15 assists and seven digs. Daesha Klein chipped in with seven digs and four assists.

Winner (4-2) will host Lyman on Sept. 12.

Bennett County 3, Gregory 0

WINNER—Bennett County downed Gregory in straight sets in a high school volleyball match on Tuesday in Winner. Set scores were 25-21, 25-16 and 26-24.

Addy Nelson, Sydney Svatos and Makayla Thomas all had four kills for the Gorillas. Svatos added 11 digs. Addy Nelson recorded 13 assists and two aces. Megan Warnke and KaeLee Haney had 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

Gregory (5-3) will play at Wagner on Thursday.
