Amateur baseball roundup: Bankers win shootout with Horned Frogs

CORSICA — Plankinton busted through with 22 hits and scored 19 runs, as the Bankers won a non-league game against Corsica-Stickney on Sunday.

Josh Geppert powered Plankinton in the slugfest. He went 4-for-6, drove in five runs and crushed a two-run homer in the second inning. Josh Engquist added three RBIs on 3-for-4 batting and he had two doubles. Engquist was the winning pitcher, after striking out six batters, allowed three runs (all unearned) in four innings.

Travis Gant, Chris Hill and Trevor Salmonson all had three hits. Salmonson hit two doubles and Hill hit one. Trevor Boyd and Ryan Urban each had two hits. Kyle Bruinsma and Tom Harris both added singles.

For the Horned Frogs, Trevor Van Genderen belted a grand slam in the fifth inning. Luke Bamberg went 3-for-4 for Corsica-Stickney, while Aaron Groeneweg added two hits. Kris Menning, Adam Fink and Jared Hermanek all had a hit apiece.

Plankinton (18-7) will play in District 3B tournament on Saturday. Corsica-Stickney (8-15) will play Dimock-Emery on Friday in Parkston in the District 5B tourney.

Menno 5, Irene 4

MENNO — Menno held on for a South Central League victory Sunday night, topping Irene 5-4 in amateur baseball action.

Cameron Kerkhove earned the win for Menno, allowing four runs on eight hits in eight innings. Tom Sattler pitched the ninth and earned the save. Both teams had eight hits in the game. On offense, Macon Oplinger had three hits and Brad Ulmer added two singles. Kyler Pekarek had an RBI triple and Damen Robish had an RBI double.

For the visiting Cardinals, LP: Simon Healy threw all eight innings and allowed eight hits and had two hits and an RBI double.

Menno (12-9, 11-5 SCL) earns the second seed in District 6B tournament, which is in Crofton, Neb., where the host Blue Jays are the top seed. Irene finishes 8-8 in the SCL.

Alexandria sweeps at Redfield

REDFIELD — Alexandria earned a pair of non-league amateur baseball wins Sunday at Redfield, winning the seven-inning games 10-3 over Redfield and 12-0 over Aberdeen Circus Sports Bar.

Against Redfield, Jordan Gau scattered five hits and two earned runs in an 11-strikeout performance. Peyton Smith, Tyson Gau, Pierce Smith and Jerrod Zens each had two hits and two RBIs. For the Pheasants, Christy Christensen threw a complete game, allowing 13 hits.

Against Circus, Tyson Gau pitched a shutout, with five hits allowed and three strikeouts. Peyton Smith and Jordan Gau had two hits and an RBI, along with John Greicar adding two hits. For Aberdeen, Chad Ellingson threw five innings allowing two runs.

Alexandria (19-1) faces Wagner on Thursday to open the District 5B tournament in Parkston.
