Amateur baseball roundup: Killer Tomatoes take down Rockets
PLATTE—Despite being outhit by the Wagner Rockets 10-8, the Platte Killer Tomatoes pulled out a 9-5 win in a Sunshine League amateur baseball game on Thursday in Platte.
Richard Sternberg, Kayden Kuiper and Ryan Allen each had two hits and two runs scored, with Kuiper and Allen each adding two RBIs.
On the mound, Michael Buitenbos earned the win in relief, allowed four earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and one walk in five innings pitched.
For Wagner, Mick Hanan took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in five innings pitched. Hanan and Drue Soukup each had doubles in the loss.
Platte (1-0) plays Alexandria on Sunday in Alexandria. Wagner (0-2) plays Dimock-Emery on Sunday in Emery.
Mount Vernon 17, Corsica-Stickney 3 (7 inn.)
CORSICA — A nine-run third inning propelled the Mount Vernon Mustangs to a road win at Corsica-Stickney Thursday in a 17-3, seven-inning Sunshine League amateur baseball team in Corsica.
The Mustangs had a big game from Zac Custer, who had a 3-for-4 game with two home runs, four RBIs and five runs scored. Chase Hetland and Deric Denning each had three hits — each with two doubles — and four RBIs. Matt Larson earned the win on the mound for MV, throwing six innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs and striking out nine. At the plate, Larson walked four times and scored four times.
The Horned Frogs had a two-RBI night from Luke Bamberg. Nate Blom took the loss on the mound, throwing four innings, allowing eight hits, 13 runs and 12 earned.
The Mustangs (5-1) will play Parkston at 5 p.m. Sunday in Mount Vernon. Corsica-Stickney (1-4) head to Winner/Colome at 5 p.m. Sunday.
