Mock, Kernels win quad
Masy Mock carded an 87 to win the Brookings Quadrangular, while the Mitchell High School girl's golf team claimed the team title at the rescheduled event on Monday at Wild Oak Golf Course in Mitchell.
The Kernels finished with a team score of 379, while Brookings took second with a 404, Madison finished third with 419 and Watertown placed fourth with a 427. A scheduling conflict moved the meet from Brookings to Mitchell.
Mock shot a 42 on the front nine and a 45 on the back. Mock had struggled in recent meets, but turned it around on Monday.
"We are so up and down and so inconsistent that it seems like if somebody has a bad day, somebody picks up the slack," Mitchell coach Keri Munsen said. "It was Masy Mock that just happened to come out on top today. She did very well."
Behind Mock, Mitchell's Ashley Zimmer shot a 93 and took third place, while Katelyn Uithoven finished with a 97 to place fifth.
"They were steady today," Munsen said. "They even had a couple bad holes in there. I bet if you ask either of them, they could cut out at least six to seven strokes off their game at least from today."
Delilah Brinker finished tied for eighth place with a 102, Kaylie Zens took 10th with a 104 and Makayla Grissom rounded out Mitchell's score with a 111.
Mitchell hosts the Mitchell Invite on Friday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell. Munsen expects at least 15 teams to compete on Friday.
Munsen added the Kernels will continue to work on shaving strokes on the putting greens this week.
"Putting is what we are really going to be working on this week leading up to the Mitchell Invite," she said. "We want to be in the 360's as a team if we possibly can. Ideally, that is where we need to be as far as competing with these other teams."
