Area volleyball: Ethan, others earn early-season wins
ETHAN — Kimball/White Lake team to Ethan in three sets on Tuesday in a high school volleyball match.
The set scores were 25-21, 25-18, 25-19.
Ethan's Darbi Gustafson led the Rustlers with 12 kills and four digs. Ellie Hohn aided Ethan with 14 assists.
Haley Pazour defended with three digs and eight kills for the WiLdKats, while Paige Munsen aided 10 set assists in the loss.
Ethan (1-0) plays Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in Forestburg. Kimball/White Lake (0-1) plays Sunshine Bible Academy on Thursday at Miller.
Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 1
FORESTBURG — Kynedi Cheeseman had a double-double to lead Hanson over Sanborn Central/Woonsocket 3-1 on Tuesday in high school volleyball action.
Set scores were 25-13, 25-9, 19-25, 25-20.
Cheeseman recorded 12 kills, 20 digs and seven aces for Hanson, which won the JV match 2-0. Katlyn Schroeder added nine kills, Hailey Doyle had 20 assists, Hannah Marquardt recorded 20 digs and Bridget Kayser had 14 digs. Sarah Kayser chipped in with five blocks for the Beavers.
Myah Selland and Morgan Selland each had nine kills in the loss, with Myah adding a team-best 12 digs. Bailey Moody had 20 assists and Kayla Olson and Maddie Vermeulen each chipped in with 11 digs.
The Blackhawks (2-2) host Ethan on Thursday in Forestburg, while the Beavers (4-0) host Parkston on Thursday.
Wagner 3, Platte-Geddes 0
WAGNER — The Wagner volleyball team defeated Platte-Geddes in three sets on Tuesday.
Set scores were 25-10, 25-17, 25-20.
The Wagner JV team won 25-13, 25-16 and the C team followed suit with a 25-12, 25-16 win.
Ali Kuca led the Wagner Red Raiders with seven kills and nine digs. Krista Dvorak aided with 11 assists.
Platte-Geddes' Kierra Hubers had five kills and Jenna Erickson added eight set assists.
Wagner (2-3) plays Chamberlain on Thursday in Wagner.
Platte-Geddes (0-1) plays Wessington Springs on Thursday in Wessington Springs.
Bon Homme 3, Andes Central 0
LAKE ANDES — The Bon Homme volleyball team improved to 2-0 on Tuesday after beating Andes Central in three sets.
Set scores were 25-18, 25-16, 25-23.
Sierra Mesman led the way for the Cavaliers with nine kills, five digs and an ace. Liz Kubal recorded seven kills, Alie Adams had 20 assists, two digs and an ace and Jeni Schmidt added three kills, three blocks and seven digs.
Payton Johanneson had a team-high eight digs, three blocks, two kills and two aces in the loss. Brooke Deurmier added seven assists.
Bon Homme (2-0) won the JV match 2-1 and plays in a tournament in Gregory on Saturday.
Andes Central (1-3) hosts Avon on Thursday.
Mount Vernon/Plankinton 3, Bridgewater-Emery 0
PLANKINTON — Mount Vernon/Plankinton opened its season with a three-set win over Bridgewater-Emery on Tuesday.
Set scores were 25-20, 25-5, 25-9.
Makaela Karst had three aces, 10 kills and nine digs to lead the Titans. Ivy Haines added two aces, while Mikayla Weiss had two aces and 21 assists. Dani Stoltz recorded six kills and three blocks in the win and Kallyn Prangley added nine digs.
Aly Hanssen had two aces, four kills and seven assists for the Huskies. Justine Dye added six kills, Mallory Haiar recorded three blocks and Chesney Arend had nine digs in the loss.
The Titans won the JV match 25-15, 25-12.
MVP (1-0) plays Corsica/Stickney on Thursday in Stickney, while the Huskies (0-1) play Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Thursday in Tripp.
Winner 3, Burke/South Central 0
WINNER — Winner defeated Burke/South Central in three sets on Tuesday with scores of 25-3, 25-16, 25-9.
The Winner JV team won 25-17, 25-17 and C team won 25-21, 25-12.
Sydney Fritz led the Winner Warriors with eight kills, two blocks and four aces. Casey Norrid did her part by recording with 19 set assists.
Burke/South Central was led by Allison Sebern, who had two blocks, 10 digs and one ace. KayDee Kirwan assisted with two blocks and seven digs in the loss.
Winner (1-1) plays in a triangular on Thursday in Valentine, Neb.
Burke/South Central (1-1) plays in a tournament on Thursday in Gregory.
Tripp-Delmont/Armour 3, Menno 0
TRIPP — Tripp-Delmont/Armour opened the season with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-13 victory over Menno on Tuesday in high school volleyball action.
Jessica Sandau totaled a match-high 10 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double for the Nighthawks. Becca Brown added 16 digs and three kills, while Hannah Just also recorded a double-double with 14 assists and 15 digs in the win.
Menno's Abby Herrboldt had a team-best nine kills and added 14 digs, four assists, one block and an ace.
TDA (1-0) won the JV match and hosts Bridgewater-Emery on Thursday in Tripp. Menno (0-1) plays Freeman Academy on Thursday in Freeman.
White River 3, Lyman 2
PRESHO — Lyman fell in a five-set thriller to White River in its home opener on Tuesday.
Set scores were 29-31, 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 15-11.
Lyman's Sara Herman had six aces and 40 digs, Carly Uthe chipped in with 13 digs and Hanna Thiry recorded two aces and 33 assists. Ashton Smith had a game-high 17 kills, Brooklyn Halverson had 13 kills and three blocks and Shelby Schindler added one block.
White River won the JV game.
Lyman (0-1) plays Gregory on Thursday in Gregory.

Sunshine Bible Academy 1
Mitchell Christian defeated Sunshine Bible Academy in four sets on Tuesday in high school volleyball action.
The set scores were 25-18, 22-25, 25-15, 25-7.
The Reynen girls led MCS with Emily Reynen recording a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Abbie Reynen recorded eight kills, eight digs, 12 aces and four blocks. Emily Schrag had 25 assists, six digs and four aces.
Sunshine Bible Academy's Rebekah Konechne added four kills and four aces. Also assisting the SBA Crusaders was Sara Pedersen with four kills and two aces.
Mitchell Christian (1-0) plays Iroquois on Thursday at Iroquois.
Sunshine Bible Academy (0-1) plays Kimball/White Lake on Thursday in its home opener in Miller.
Viborg-Hurley 3, Canistota 1
HURLEY — The Canistota volleyball team fell in four sets on Tuesday.
Set scores were 25-11, 25-18, 22-25, 25-11. No stats were reported despite attempts to reach coaches.
Canistota hosts Centerville on Thursday, while Viborg-Hurley hosts Dakota Christian on Tuesday.
Stanley County 3, Chamberlain 2
CHAMBERLAIN — Stanley County defeated Chamberlain in five sets Tuesday in high school volleyball action.
The scores were 20-25, 25-9, 8-25, 25-16, 15-9.
Tawnee Whitley led the Stanley County Lady Buffaloes with two aces and 14 digs. Kiyana Martin added to the score sheet with four aces and 12 assists.
The Chamberlain Cubs were led by Brigitte Byrd with 16 digs. Playing alongside Byrd, Maisey Fees-Spellman had seven kills and one block.
Chamberlain (0-1) plays Wagner on Thursday in Wagner. Stanley County (1-0) plays against White River on Saturday in Fort Pierre.
Gregory 3, St. Francis Indian 0
GREGORY — The Gregory volleyball team opened its season with a straight sets victory over St. Francis Indian on Tuesday night in Gregory.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 25-22. No stats were reported despite attempts to reach coaches.
The Gorillas (1-0) host Lyman on Thursday.

GAYVILLE — Marion suffered a four-set loss against Gayville-Volin on Tuesday in high school volleyball action.
Set scores were 25-20, 29-27, 18-25, 28-26. No other stats were reported.
Marion plays Irene-Wakonda on Thursday in Wakonda.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — The Wessington Springs Spartans defeated Iroquois in straight sets on Tuesday in a high school volleyball match.

CHESTER — Chester defeated McCook Central/Montrose 25-19, 25-9, 25-18 on Tuesday in a high school volleyball match in Chester.
Brianna Painter defended the McCook Central/Montrose Fighting Cougars with 17 digs. Dani Forster added five kills for the Fighting Cougars.
McCook Central/Montrose (1-4) plays against Parker on Thursday in Salem.
