Krause, Cowins finish in top 5 at Mitchell Invitational

In the first cross country meet of the season, the Mitchell cross country team had plenty of strong individual performances at the Mitchell Cross Country Invitational on Saturday in Mitchell.

Riley Cowins finished in second place in the boys varsity meet with a time of 17:24.52 and Coby Lee placed 10th with a time of 19:18.28.

Mary Krause led the way on the girls side, finishing third with a time of 16.28.64.

No team points were kept at the meet.

Kernel coach Scott Munsen said he was pleased with how the meet went for his team.

"I think it was pretty good," Munsen said about his team's performances. "We are a young team and we were able to bring some kids along today."

Mitchell only ran a couple of runners in the varsity 5K race, with a majority of its runners competing in the 3K junior varsity meet.

The Mitchell boys junior varsity team placed four runners in the top five with Caleb Larson, who also plays on the MHS soccer team, finishing first overall with a time of 10:30.26.

Kaelyn Kaul took home third place in the girls junior varsity race for Mitchell with a time of 12:39.20.

The varsity cross country teams compete at Watertown Triangular at 4 p.m. Friday in Watertown.
