Amateur baseball roundup: Angels, Raptors advance to District 5 title game

PARKSTON -- The Alexandria Angels pulled away from the Platte Killer Tomatoes in a 13-3 win in the second game of the District 5 amateur baseball tournament for both teams Sunday at The Pond in Parkston.

Tyson Gau picked up the win for the Angels, throwing seven innings and striking out 10.

Gau added a three-run home run and a three-run double for six RBIs for Alexandria. Cole Wenande finished with four singles, while Reed Smith added two hits, including a double in the win.

Richard Sternberg took the loss on the mound for Platte and finished with four strikeouts. Keith Cutler had two singles for the Killer Tomatoes, while Hayden Kuiper added a double.

Alexandria plays Dimock/Emery for the tournament championship at 8 p.m. Friday at the Pond in Parkston. Platte plays at 8 p.m. Thursday against the winner of Tripp/Delmont vs. Mount Vernon to be played Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Parkston.

Dimock/Emery 4, Parkston Mudcats 1

PARKSTON -- Phil Johnson had a two-run double to help lead Dimock/Emery over the Parkston Mudcats 4-1 in a second-round game of the District 5 amateur baseball tournament Sunday at The Pond in Parkston.

Kyle Larson pitched nine innings with nine strikeouts to earn the win for Dimock/Emery.

Jason Schmidt added an RBI single for the Raptors.

Tom Murtha took the loss for the Mudcats, pitching a complete game and striking out 11. Jeff Fish had a triple and a double, while Michael Lukkason added a solo home run to lead Parkston.

Dimock/Emery will play Alexandria in the District 5 championship game at 8 p.m. Friday at The Pond in Parkston. The Mudcats will play the winner of the Parkston Bullheads vs. Corsica/Stickney game at 6 p.m. Thursday in Parkston.

Wessington Springs 7, Plankinton 6

HAYES -- Wessington Springs topped Plankinton 7-6 in a second-round game of the District 3 amateur baseball tournament Saturday in Hayes.

Tyler Waddle earned the win for the Owls pitching nine innings, giving up six runs off eight hits and striking out 14.

Mitch McLagan had four hits, while Adam Kaus and Nathan Hainy each added a home run for Wessington Springs.

Travis Gant took the loss for Plankinton, pitching the complete game giving up seven runs on 13 hits and striking out nine.

Kyle Bruinsma had three hits including two home runs to lead Plankinton.

Wessington Springs plays Miller in the District 3 championship game at 8 p.m. Thursday in Pierre. Plankinton plays Kimball/White Lake at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Pierre.

Kimball/White Lake 20, Armour 10

HAYES -- Kimball/White Lake beat Armour 20-10 in an elimination game of the District 3 amateur baseball tournament Sunday in Hayes.

Ben Bogenhagen pitched a complete game and earned the win for Kimball/White Lake.

Jesse Kroupa had four hits including a home run and Trent Wookey added four hits to lead Kimball/White Lake.

Matt Randle and Brian Zeman each added a home run in the win.

Kimball/White Lake plays Plankinton at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Pierre, while Armour is eliminated.

Mitchell Mad Dogs 9, Sioux Falls Saints 3

SIOUX FALLS -- The Mitchell Mad Dogs topped the Sioux Falls Saints 9-3 in an amateur baseball game Sunday in Sioux Falls.

Earning the win on the mound for Mitchell was Derek Miller, who pitched six innings, gave up three runs and struck out six. Trevor Arnold came in for relief and had two strikeouts.

Joey Fitzgerald had four hits and three runs scored, while Nick Tadlock added a triple and three RBIs for Mitchell. Nolan Miller and Dylanger Pierson each added two hits.

The Mad Dogs (12-8) play Yankton at 8 p.m. Friday night at Drake Field in the first game of the Region tournament.
