Amateur baseball roundup: Mudcats hold off Platte 9-7

PARKSTON -- The Parkston Mudcats held off the Platte Killer Tomatoes 9-7 in Sunshine League action Sunday in Parkston.

Tom Murtha pitched the complete game for the Mudcats, allowing seven runs, two earned, on nine hits and struck out 12.

Jeff Harris finished 2-for-5 for Parkston, while Tyler Nolz added a hit and two RBIs.

Hayden Kuiper and Ryan Allen each finished with two hits for the Killer Tomatoes, while Jon Hoeksma started on the mound for Platte. He took the loss, going 4 ⅔ innings, allowing eight runs, five earned on seven hits and struck out two.

The Mudcats (25-4, 11-3 SL) play the Sioux Falls Saints at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Parkston.

Alexandria 4, Dimock/Emery 3

ALEXANDRIA -- Tyson Gau pitched a complete game and came through with the winning hit with two outs in the ninth inning for the Alexandria Angels in a 4-3 win over Dimock/Emery Sunday.

Gau pitched nine innings, allowing three runs on five hits and struck out 13. Chris Marek finished 2-for-4 with a home run for Alexandria, while Gau and Thomas Gulledge each added two hits.

Jason Schmidt took the loss on the mound for the Raptors. He allowed one run in 1 ⅓ innings and struck out two. Steve Ernster finished 1-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.

The Angels (17-2, 13-1 SL) play the Sioux Falls Brewers at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Sioux Falls, while the Raptors (20-7, 10-4 SL) play Salem at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Salem.

Mount Vernon 9, Parkston Bullheads 1

PARKSTON -- Mount Vernon racked up 20 hits against the Parkston Bullheads en route to a 9-1 Sunshine League victory Sunday in Parkston.

Nate Zens hit a homerun and finished the day going 3-for-5 with an RBI Cardinals, while Brian Kluth added two RBIs batting 2-for-6. Deric Denning went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Chase Hetland added a double and an RBI going 3-for-6.

Eric Giblin got the win on the mound for Mount Vernon, throwing seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and struck out eight.

Eric Norden took the loss for the Bullheads, He pitched 5 ⅓ innings allowing five earned runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts.

The Cardinals (3-11 SL) play Corsica/Stickney at 8 p.m. Thursday in Mount Vernon.

Corscia/Stickney 14, Tripp/Delmont 2 (seven innings)

DELMONT -- Corsica/Stickney beat Tripp/Delmont 14-2 in a Sunshine League game Sunday in Delmont.

Steven Blom got the win for Corsica/Stickney striking out six in seven innings. Kris Menning had four RBIs off four hits including a homerun and a double to lead Corsica/Stickney. Luke Bamberg hit a homerun and added two RBIs in the win.

The losing pitcher for Tripp/Delmont was Brandon Auch. Jared Weber had two hits to lead the Indee Jacks

The Horned Frogs (10-8, 7-7 SL) play Mount Vernon at 8 p.m. Thursday in Mount Vernon.

Doubleheader: Tabor 8, Scotland 7 (game one); Tabor 16, Scotland 6 (game two)

TABOR -- Tabor swept Scotland in a doubleheader Sunday in Tabor.

Tabor won the first game 8-7. Blaze Vanecek was the winning pitcher and Nate Kloucek hit a homerun to lead Tabor.

Wyatt Brown took the loss for Scotland, pitching seven innings. He allowed nine hits with two strikeouts. Craig Kronaizl had three hits in the loss.

In game two Rob Keppen earned the win for Tabor as they beat Scotland 16-6. Vanecek and Lance Ranek each had two hits for Tabor.

Scotland's Joe Kronaizl had a double and and single to lead Scotland.

Scotland (0-16) plays at Lesterville Friday.

Four Corners 20, Kimball/White Lake 11

KIMBALL -- Brad Hand had 11 RBIs to lead Four Corners over Kimball/White Lake 20-11 in a Pony Hills League game Sunday in Kimball.

Tate Gabriel picked up the win on the mound for Four Corners.

Taking the loss for Kimball/White Lake was Ben Bogenhagen who pitched all nine innings. Eathen Gaulke hit a grand slam for Kimball/White Lake and Wesley Kroupa added a home run.

Four Corners (6-5 PH) next plays Wessington Springs on Sunday. Kimball/White Lake (3-7 PH) plays Chamberlain in White Lake on Thursday.

Avon 5, Yankton 4 (10 innings)

AVON -- Avon beat Yankton 5-4 in 10 innings Sunday in Avon. The winning pitcher for Avon was Nick Honke.

Additional stats were not reported despite attempts to reach managers.

Avon (7-8) plays Wynot Thursday in Wynot.

Wessington Springs 14, Armour 4

ARMOUR -- The Wessington Springs Owls topped Armour 14-4 in Pony Hills League action Sunday in Armour.

Adam Kaus pitched a complete game for the Owls allowing four runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts. Cody Kopfmann finished with six hits, while Mitch McLagan had four hits to lead Wessington Springs.

Craig Holbeck took the loss on the mound for Armour.

The Owls (9-6) play Miller at 8 p.m. Thursday in Miller.

Saturday: Winner/Colome 8, Parkston Mudcats 3

WINNER -- Winner/Colome beat the Parkston Mudcats 8-3 in a non-league game Saturday in Winner.

Derek Graesser had a triple and double with two RBIs to lead Winner/Colome. Austin Richey went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Drew Weber earned the win for Winner/Colome giving up two runs in six innings pitched with three strikeouts.

Brady Nolz took the loss for Parkston. He threw seven innings giving up six runs, one earned, with five strikeouts. Jeff Harris was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Nolz had a triple to lead Parkston.
