Amateur baseball roundup: Owls top Bankers 8-5

PLANKINTON -- The Plankinton Bankers fell to the Wessington Springs Owls 8-5 in a Pony Hills League amateur baseball game Sunday in Plankinton.

The Owls were led by Mitch McLagan with three hits, while Adam Kaus, Tyler Waddle and Zach Cranston each added two hits.

Waddle picked up the win on the mound, going nine innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out seven.

Plankinton was led by Trevor Salmonson with a double and an RBI, while Trevor Boyd added two hits in the loss.

The Bankers held a fundraiser with food and drinks for fans and raised $900 to donate to the Wessington Springs tornado relief fund. Plankinton also donated $100 to Wessington Springs' player McLagan.

The Owls (6-5, 5-0 PH) play Chamberlain at 7 p.m. Sunday, while Plankinton (12-10, 6-3 PH) plays at Four Corners at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Alexandria 11, Parkston Bullheads 1

ALEXANDRIA -- The Sunshine League leading Alexandria Angels topped the Parkston Bullheads 11-1 in seven innings Sunday in Alexandria.

Chris Marek started for the Angels, going six innings, allowing one run on three hits and struck out seven.

Thomas Gulledge went 4-for-4 with two RBIs in the win, while John Greicar finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Jordan Gau added three hits.

The Angels second game Sunday against Tripp-Delmont was cancelled. No make-up date has been determined.

Alexandria (13-2, 8-1 SL) plays Mitchell at 8 p.m. Thursday in Alexandria.

Platte 9, Mount Vernon 8

PLATTE -- The Platte Killer Tomatoes topped Mount Vernon 9-8 in a Sunshine League amateur baseball game Sunday in Platte.

Pat Buerink got the win on the mound for the Killer Tomatoes throwing one inning of relief.

Jon Hoeksma finished with four hits and two RBIs for Platte, while Hayden Kuiper finished with two hits and two RBIs. Mike Buitenbos added two hits and an RBI in the win.

Cam Deinert and Rob Kazi each had two hits for the Cardinals.

Platte (6-10, 4-7 SL) plays Corsica/Stickney at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Platte.

Parkston Mudcats 16, Mitchell 6

The Parkston Mudcats topped the Mitchell Mad Dogs 16-6 in Sunshine League action Sunday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

The Mudcats were led by Pat Harris and Jeff Heisinger, who each finished with four hits. Heisinger had three RBIs and Harris added two RBIs. Trevor Freudenthal hit a home run, while finishing with three hits and two RBIs.

Brady Nolz picked up the win on the mound for the Mudcats. He threw nine innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and struck out eight.

Mitchell was led by Chris Housley and Darrin Nager, both finishing with two hits. Nager drove in three runs for the Mad Dogs.

The Mudcats (22-2, 8-2 SL) play Dimock/Emery at 7 p.m. Friday in Parkston. Mitchell plays Alexandria at 8 p.m. Thursday in Alexandria.

Dimock/Emery 13, Corsica/Stickney 0

CORSICA -- Dimock/Emery shutout Corsica/Stickney 13-0 in a Sunshine League game Sunday in Corsica.

Josh Engquist picked up the win on the mound, going all seven innings, allowing five hits and striking out eight.

Phil Johnson finished with three hits, including a two-run home run, while Jared Schmidt added four hits and a solo home run for the Raptors.

Alex Kocer led CS with two hits.

The Raptors (17-5, 9-2 SL) play the Parkston Bullheads at 8 p.m. Thursday and the Parkston Mudcats at 7 p.m. Friday. Both games ate in Parkston.
