Amateur baseball roundup: Mad Dogs win 4-3, Mudcats take two

Sam Schumacher came through with the game winning RBI for the Mitchell Mad Dogs in a 4-3 win over Mount Vernon in Sunshine League action Sunday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.Trevor Arnold was with winning pitcher for Mitchell (8-3, 6-3 SL). He threw six innings, allowing one earned run and struck out six.

Tyler Earls contributed a two RBI double for the Mad Dogs, while Nick Tadlock added three hits, including a double.

Chase Hetland led the Cardinals with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.

The Mad Dogs play Platte at 8 p.m. Thursday at Cadwell Park.

Alexandria 10, Corsica/Stickney 1

CORSICA -- The Alexandria Angels topped Corsica/Stickney 10-1 in a Sunshine League game Sunday.

Chris Marek picked up the win on the mound for the Angels. He pitched five innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits and struck out three.

Tyson Gau finished 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Peyton Smith added two RBIs.

Ryan Buck and Lee Neiwenhuis each picked up a hit for Corsica/Stickney in the loss.

The Angels (12-2, 7-1 SL) play the Sioux Falls Brewers at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Alexandria.

Plankinton 9, Kimball/White Lake 4

PLANKINTON -- Travis Gant struck out 17 batters as Plankinton topped Kimball/White Lake 9-4 in a Pony Hills League amateur baseball game Sunday in Plankinton.

Gant pitched all nine innings in the win, allowing two earned runs. Trevor Salmonson finished 4-for-4, while Billy Hamilton hit two doubles for Plankinton. Orric Earl and Chriss Hill each added two hits and two RBIs.

Brian Zeman led KWL with two hits and an RBI.

Plankinton (11-8, 5-1 PH) plays Chamberlain at 8 p.m. Thursday in Chamberlain.

Dimock-Emery 16, Wessington Springs 6

WESSINGTON SPRINGS -- Jason Schmidt his a grand slam to lead Dimock-Emery to a 16-6 win over Wessington Springs in amateur baseball action Sunday in Wessington Springs.

Josh Engquist picked up the win on the mound, allowing one unearned run and striking out three.

Armando Rodriguez hit a home run for the Owls, while five Wessington Springs batters finished with two hits in the loss.

The Raptors (15-5) play at Madison at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, while the Owls (4-4) play at Four Corners at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Corsica/Stickney 5, Parkston Bullheads 3

CORSICA -- Corsica/Stickney topped the Parkston Bullheads 5-3 in a Sunshine League game Sunday in Corsica.

Ryan Hongslo got the win on the mound for the Horned Frogs (7-5, 6-4 SL), pitching seven innings and striking out nine.

Derek Bultjie finished with two hits and run scored, while Steve Blom added a double and a run scored.

Tim Rands picked up two singles and an RBI for the Bullheads in the loss.

Parkston Mudcats 4, Winner/Colome 0 (Game 1)

Parkston Mudcats 4, Winner/Colome 3 12 Innings (Game 2)

PARKSTON -- The Parkston Mudcats swept a doubleheader against Winner/Colome Sunday in Parkston.

The Mudcats topped WC 4-0 in the first game, and Tyler Nolz drove in the game winning run in the 12th inning for a 4-3 win in the second game.

Jeff Harris and Jeff Fish each homered in the first game, while Tyler Kuiper picked up the win on the mound.

Trevor Freudenthal hit a three-run double for the Mudcats in the second game to give his team the lead in the sixth inning, before WC tied it to send the game into extra innings.

Derek Graesser hit a home run and drove in two runs to lead WC in the second game.

The Mudcats (20-2) play Humboldt at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Montrose.
