Marlin JV girls take 5th at state

SIOUX FALLS — The Mitchell Marlin JV girls hockey team finished in fifth place at the state tournament over the weekend.

After dropping its first game Friday to Rushmore, Mitchell defeated Sioux Falls and Yankton to finish the tournament 2-1.

In Sunday’s fifth-place game against Yankton, Ashley Zimmer had two goals and an assist, while goalie Katelyn Uithoven made 21 saves on 21 shots on goal. Jacey Brunsen and Kyla Konfrst also each scored a goal.

Brookings took first place after defeating Rushmore 5-3 in Sunday’s championship.

Mitchell Bantam team takes 7th

FORT PIERRE — The Mitchell Marlin Bantam hockey team went 1-2 and finished seventh at the state tournament over the weekend.

In the seventh-place game, the Marlins topped Yankton 8-1 and was led by Jake Jarman with a hat trick. Jordan Dirkes and Tucker Hohn each scored two goals, while Adam Loes added one in the win.

Goalie Josh Loecker made 21 saves on 22 shots on goal for Mitchell.

Sioux Falls East won the tournament, beating Brookings 4-3 in the championship Sunday.

Carlson has goal in Marlin loss

BROOKINGS — The Mitchell Marlin boys varsity hockey team fell 4-1 to top-ranked Brookings Saturday evening.

The Marlins gave up two goals in both the first and second periods, but held the Rangers scoreless in the third. Cole Carlson had Mitchell’s only goal of the game in the second period, with Jacob Cersosimo recording the assist.

Goalie Weston Gauger made 30 saves on 34 shots on goal, and the Marlins made 15 shots on goal.

Mitchell (5-8) ends the regular season by hosting Sioux Falls 2 at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Mitchell Activities Center.

Jackrabbit men beat USD 75-61

BROOKINGS (AP) — Jordan Dykstra scored 19 points Saturday and grabbed 10 rebounds as South Dakota State dominated Summit League rival South Dakota 75-61.

The Jackrabbits never trailed and jumped to an 8-1 lead, then used runs of 8-0 and 11-2 to lead 37-24 at halftime. Dykstra scored 11 points in the half.

South Dakota State (18-11, 10-4) opened the second half with a 7-2 run and led by as many as 23. The Coyotes ripped a 10-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Tyler Flack, to narrow the lead to 67-51 at 3:48, but the Jackrabbits’ lead was too big to overcome.

Brayden Carlson scored 15 for South Dakota State, Jake Bittle had 13, Cody Larson had 12, and Chad White tallied 10 and five assists.

Brandon Bos led South Dakota (12-17, 6-8) with 21 points and Flack finished with 16.

Jackrabbits top USD women

VERMILLION — Five players scored in double figures for the South Dakota State University women’s basketball team in a 99-88 win over the University of South Dakota Saturday in the final regular season game.

Megan Waytashek led the way for the Jacks (22-8, 13-1 Summit) with 18 points, Mariah Clarin and Gabby Boever each had 14, Steph Paluch scored 13 and Clarissa Ober added 12. Mitchell native Kerri Young recorded eight points and four assists.

USD’s Raeshel Contreras scored 18 points, while Lisa Loeffler and Polly Harrington each posted 16. Two other Coyotes had double figures.

SDSU outrebounded the Coyotes 37-25.

Next, both teams play in the Summit League Championships, which begins Saturday in Sioux Falls.

Watertown Kings win state amateur basketball tourney

PRESHO — The Watertown Kings defeated Foothills Contracting 89-73 to win the Class B championship at the state amateur basketball tournament Sunday in Presho.

Mitchell native Justin Brown, who plays for Foothills Contracting of Brookings, scored 19 points in the title game and made the all-tournament team.

The Class B Most Valuable Player was Mitch Boeck, who plays for the Watertown Kings.
