Sigmund to defend SDGA Mid-Am title

DAKOTA DUNES — The South Dakota Golf Association’s Mid-Amateur Championship begins at 9 a.m. today at Dakota Dunes Country Club in Dakota Dunes.

Mitchell native Brandon Sigmund will attempt to defend his title. Sigmund won the event in 2012 by a single stroke, carding a 141 over 36 holes.

There are 71 golfers competing in the event this year and was open to golfers ages 35 and older.

DWU volleyball falls

The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s volleyball team fell to Great Plains Athletic Conference foe Morningside.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-10, 25-13.

Taylor Spence led DWU with six kills, two assists and five digs. Elizabeth Humiston added five kills, while Briana Jung had one kill, eight assists and four digs.

DWU (6-19, 0-9 GPAC) plays Briar Cliff Tuesday in Sioux City, Iowa.

DWU sponsoring event with Finch

The Dakota Wesleyan softball team is sponsoring a morning with former Olympic softball pitcher Jennie Finch, along with the Sioux Falls Diamond Fastpitch Softball Club in Sioux Falls.

Finch will make an appearance at the Diamonds’ practice facility Nov. 9. from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The former University of Arizona hurler will provide defensive and offensive instruction, a pitching demonstration, give a motivational speech, sign autographs and take photos with athletes.

The cost of the event is $250 per participant. For $25, participants can order a photo with Finch, but the photos must be pre-ordered. All proceeds from the photos will go to the Wounded Warrior Program.

Lawn bowling tourney planned for Sunday

The Fourth Annual Lakeview Lawn Bowling tournament is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at the bowling green at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.

Play consists of a singles tournament followed by a pairs tournament. A triples tournament will follow if daylight allows.

Lawn bowlers of all skill levels are welcome. This is a social tournament with small prizes awarded.

MTI rodeo team has strong showing

FORT DODGE, Iowa — The Mitchell Technical Institute rodeo team battled the rain and mud in Iowa last weekend.

The Mavericks’ first stop was at Iowa Central Community College Friday in Fort Dodge, Iowa, where the team finished third.

Kyle Hapney took first in saddle bronc, while teammate Jim O’Leary finished second.

Tucker Whitney, of Iona, finished fifth in team roping with partner Blake Boysen.

Saturday, the Mavericks headed to Ames, Iowa, for the Cyclone Stampede hosted by Iowa State University.

Evan Thyberg took first in the tie-down roping, while Klay O’Daniel and Tanner Radway, of South Dakota State University, took first in team roping.
