BRANDON — The Kernels cut nearly 30 strokes off last year’s Class AA state boys’ tournament final score.

Mitchell carded a 321 in the first round and a 345 Tuesday for a two-day total of 666, finishing in 12th. Rapid City Central edged Mitchell by a stroke for 11th and Sioux Falls Roosevelt was 10th with a 655.

“With each year you gain experience and you want to see positive results and we saw that this year,” Mitchell co-head coach Rob Marchand said, adding the windy conditions were tough for the golfers. “We were a little disappointed because we just got beat out by a couple of teams for our top 10 goal. But the guys all improved from a year ago and we saw improvement.”

Sioux Falls O’Gorman won the state championship with a two-day total of 594.

Mitchell’s top finisher was junior Jacob Rice, who medaled and tied for 20th with a 156. Rice shot a 74 Monday and an 82 in the second round. He improved on his 38th-place finish from a year ago.

Junior Jaron Weich just missed the top 20, finishing in a tie for 23rd with a two-round total of 158. Weich shot a pair of 79s in the tournament.

“It’s great to get guys placing and around the top 20,” Marchand said.

Landon Pooley finished with a 177, Cade Carpenter carded a 184, Ryan Solberg had a 187 and Ryker Kreutzfeldt finished with a 198.

Marchand added the team already has expectations for next year, saying, “They want to be a top six team next year. They decided that already on their own and don’t see why they can’t do that.”
