The Kernels are led by juniors Jacob Rice and Jaron Weich, who have a scoring average of 78 and 79, respectively, heading into the tournament.

“Jaron and Jacob are our two best golfers and the other boys are gaining valuable experience this week.” Mitchell coach Mark Horan said. “We don’t have a state championship team but we are expecting to do some things while we’re here.”

The other Kernel golfers competing over the next two days include senior Ryker Kreutzfeldt, sophomores Landon Pooley and Ryan Solberg, and freshman Cade Carpenter.

Earlier this season, Rice and Weich finished in the top 10 of the Brandon Valley Invitational held at the Brandon Golf Course. Rice shot a 74, while Weich finished with a 75.

“As a team we are familiar with this course and after our practice round today we have a game plan in place,” Horan said Sunday.

Pooley will be first to tee off for the Kernels at 9:50 a.m., with his teammates all scheduled to start between 10 and 10:20 a.m.

In 2012, the Kernels finished 14th out of 16 teams with a score of 695 at the state tournament held in Mitchell at Lakeview Golf Course. Weich led the Kernels in 36th place, while Rice was right behind him in 38th.

Heading into play, Max Donohue of Sioux Falls O’Gorman has the lowest average score at 71, while Jace Guthmiller of Yankton and Sam Musch of Rapid City Stevens are at 73.

Class AA golfers start teeing off at 9 a.m. today.
