MHS tennis team tops Madison 7-2

The Kernels picked up their sixth win of the season after defeating Madison 7-2 in a high school girls’ tennis match Tuesday at Hitchcock Park in Mitchell.

Singles wins by No. 1 Grace Grabenstein and No. 6 Avery Larson highlighted the match. Grabenstein defeated Ella Graham 7-5, 6-0, while Larson beat Katie Bergheim 6-3, 6-3.

The Kernels also received wins from three other singles players and two doubles teams.

Wesleyan falls to Morningside in 3

Dakota Wesleyan fell to Morningside 25-19, 25-14, 25-15 Tuesday in Sioux City, Iowa.

Sarah Kruse had 12 kills for the Tigers, while Briana Jung tallied 15 assists.

The Mustangs were led by Maggie Vondrak with 15 kills.

DWU (4-13, 0-4) plays at Midland University Friday in Fremont, Neb.

Mitchell girls rout Garretson 6-0 By The Daily Republic

The Mitchell girls’ soccer team got its second win of the season Tuesday. The Kernels defeated Garretson 6-0 on senior night at the Pepsi Soccer Complex.

Emily Paulson recorded a hat trick — three goals — to lead Mitchell. She scored two goals in the first half and one in the second.

Senior Kara Hanson had a goal, Kayla Stangeland scored one and Bailey Morgan added one.

The Kernels led 5-0 at halftime.

Midfielder Katie Stern and defender Morgen Hines were the other seniors to take the field for the Kernels.

“I was really excited for the girls,” Mitchell girls’ soccer coach Kayla Braffet said. “It was senior night and they played in front of their biggest crowd of the season, so it was nice for them to do so well.”

Mitchell (2-8-1) plays Tea Area Thursday in Tea.
