Dion tops field at BH Invite

TYNDALL — Wagner’s Nick Dion topped the boys’ field at the Bon Homme cross country invitational Monday.

Dion finished in 18 minutes, beating the second-place finisher by 4 seconds.

North Central won the meet with 25 points, while Wagner was second with 29. On the girls’ side, Ethan/Parkston won the team crown with 18 points. Burke/South Central was second (35) and Bon Homme was third (38).

Bon Homme’s Maddison Hajek took second in 16:04, while Ethan/Parkston’s Taya Heisinger was third with 16:57.

Wesleyan’s Muilenburg earns conference honors

Senior wide receiver Anthony Muilenburg set a Dakota Wesleyan football record en route to being named the Great Plains Athletic Conference offensive player of the week, which was announced Monday.

Muilenburg, a Sioux Falls native, set the record for number of receiving yards in a single game at 251 yards Saturday against No. 21 Northwestern. He broke his own record of 233.

Muilenburg leads the GPAC and NAIA in receiving yards per game.

MHS fastpitch team splits with Sioux Falls Roosevelt

SIOUX FALLS — Ellie Rew and Hallie Misaiszek pitched the Kernels to a 3-2 win in the final game of a high school fastpitch softball doubleheader against Sioux Falls Roosevelt Monday.

Mitchell fell 8-0 in the opener. Andrea Konz took the loss, striking out two in five innings.

Misiaszek, Alyssa Green and Konz each had a hit in the loss.

In the second game, Rew threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out one. Misiaszek got the win in relief, throwing 1 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.

Rachael Wahlen went 1-for-2 with an RBI, Green and Jenna Skinner each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

“Their focus was sharper in the second game,” said Mitchell coach Jim Misiaszek, whose team has four games remaining in the regular season. “We got a run on them early and that helped us get some confidence.”

Mitchell (3-16) hosts Sioux Falls O’Gorman at 6 p.m. Monday and hosts Sioux Falls Lincoln on senior night Oct. 1.

MHS boys’ soccer team edged on senior night

Renner Mickelson scored Mitchell’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to James Valley Christian Monday at the Mitchell Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex.

It was the final home game for the Kernels, who honored seniors Nick Cundy, Niko Arnold, Dylan Weitzman, Christian Thomas, Cole Carlson, Mickelson and Weston Gauger.

Mickelson scored the goal in the 67th minute, assisted by Kelby Escobin.

Cundy was the man of the match, and Mitchell had 12 shots on goal. Carlson made 16 saves in the loss.

“The guys played their hearts out trying to get a win for the seniors,” Mitchell coach Jason Wear said.

Mitchell (2-7-2) plays Tea Area Saturday in Tea.

Kernels drops two at girls’ tennis triangular in Huron

HURON — Haley Smith and Allison Buckley teamed up for two Flight 2 doubles wins over Aberdeen Roncalli and Huron in a high school girls’ tennis triangular Monday.

The Kernels (5-12) lost to Roncalli 6-3 and were edged 5-4 by the Tigers.

Sammy Pooley won both singles matches at Flight 4 and Smith and Buckley came out with singles victories as well.

Mitchell hosts Madison at 4 p.m. today at Hitchcock Park.
