YANKTON — While both teams struggled to find energy, the Mitchell Kernel volleyball team defeated Yankton 3-1 Saturday afternoon.

Set scores were 18-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-11.

“It took us a set to wake up, and then after that first set our kids stuck with the game plan,” Mitchell head coach Deb Thill said. “We wanted to serve aggressively and try to keep Yankton out of system. When they were in system, they were doing a really good job against us.”

Taylin Alm put up 23 kills and seven aces for the Kernels, while Emma Schmidt had 36 assists and three kills. Sidney Neugebauer had 15 digs in the win, and Alison Murphy had nine kills.

Becky Frick led the Gazelles with 13 digs, seven kills and four aces on the day, with Hailey Bockholt contributing seven kills and three blocks. Haley Mines recorded 15 digs and Paige Theiman added 18 assists.

Yankton head coach Tiffany Beste said Mitchell’s Alm caused a lot of damage for her team because she was the first aggressive player the Gazelles (1-5) have faced.

“When you have that kind of an offensive strength to go to, it’s really hard for us,” Beste said. “She’s going to score a lot of points for them every time they play, regardless of who they play.”

Beste added adjusting Mitchell’s block midgame may have affected the outcome as well.

“That was hard for our defense to respond to,” she said. “That’s something we can work on in practice, and hopefully the next time we come up against Mitchell we’ll do a better job.”

As Mitchell moves to a 4-2 record this season, Thill said there are still a few adjustments to work on as the season continues.

“We definitely learned a lot about our team the more we play,” she said. “We still had a few communication errors and some serve-receive errors, and those are the things you’re always going to try to improve on.”

The Kernels travel to play at Watertown Tuesday.
