Area high school volleyball roundup: Avon edges Nighthawks in five sets

TRIPP — Chesney Nagel had 10 kills, seven blocks and 18 digs to lead Avon to a five-set win over Tripp-Delmont/Armour in a high school volleyball match Tuesday.

Ariana Oorlog added eight kills, two blocks and 24 digs for Avon. Hanna Powers had 26 assists, six kills and one ace, while Heidi Cap chipped in with five kills, 13 blocks and two digs.

The Nighthawks were led by Hannah Just, who recorded 15 kills and 10 assists. Jessica Sandau chipped in with 10 kills, 10 assists and 39 digs, while Becca Brown had seven kills and five blocks.

Avon won the JV game 2-1.

Avon (3-1) plays Centerville Thursday in Centerville. The Nighthawks host Kimball/White Lake Thursday in Armour.

Parkston 3, Andes Central 2

LAKE ANDES — Laura Weiss had 21 kills, 10 digs and two aces to lead the Parkston volleyball team past the Andes Central Eagles in five sets Tuesday.

Set scores were 14-25, 25-22 25-13, 18-25 15-13.

Whitney Weber chipped in with 16 assists, 10 digs and eight aces. Halli Heisinger had four kills, four digs and four aces, while Kenzie Lee had five kills, 14 digs and four aces.

Andes Central was led by Dennisha and Payton Johanneson. Dennisha Johanneson had 15 kills, five blocks, 17 assists, seven digs and four aces. Payton Johanneson had 17 kills, four blocks, 15 assists, 15 digs and four aces.

Cybil Chytka added four kills and three blocks for the Eagles.

Parkston (5-2) plays Corsica/Stickney Tuesday in Corsica. Andes Central plays Corsica/Stickney Thursday in Lake Andes.

Gregory 3, Bennett County 1

WINNER — Gregory topped Bennett County 3-1 Tuesday in high school volleyball action.

Set scores were 25-18, 26-28, 25-22, 26-24.

Courtney Opbroek had 15 kills, 14 digs and six aces for the Gorillas, while Brett Steffen recorded 23 assists and five aces. Codi Horst added 28 digs and Briana Leber had 10 digs.

Gregory (5-3) plays at Wagner Thursday.

Winner 3, Bennett County 0

WINNER — Winner defeated Bennett County 25-14, 25-7, 25-12 Tuesday to remain undefeated.

Cassidy Hanson recorded seven kills, 11 digs, one block and two aces in the win. Emily Richey had 18 digs, Lindsey Calhoon had 15 digs, three kills, one block and one ace and Sara Husher added 18 assists, six digs and two aces for Winner.

Bennett County was led by Tania Risse with six kills and 11 digs.

Winner (5-0) plays at a tournament in Clark Saturday.

Bridgewater-Emery 3, Menno 0

MENNO — Aly Hanssen recorded 10 assists and five digs to help lift Bridgewater-Emery over Menno 3-0 Tuesday.

Set scores were 25-21, 25-13, 25-16.

Tiana Kayser had eight kills and two aces, Chesney Arend recorded nine digs, Justine Dye had six kills and two aces and Hannah Harberts added 10 assists in the win.

For Menno, Devon Bloch had five kills, one block, five digs and one ace. Madison Huber recorded nine assists, three digs and one ace and Tara Spencer had two kills, five blocks, eight digs and one ace.

Menno (0-3) hosts Ethan Thursday, while Bridgewater-Emery (2-1) won the JV game and plays Irene-Wakonda Thursday in Wakonda.

Hanson 3, Howard 0

ALEXANDRIA — The Hanson Beavers swept Howard 25-9, 25-10, 25-14 Tuesday to earn their fifth win of the year.

Kynedi Cheeseman had eight kills and seven aces, Sydney Dodd had seven kills and three digs, Emily Brown had eight assists and Leah Marsh added five digs and eight aces in the win.

For Howard, Katelyn Kampshoff had 14 assists and Shelby Thompsen had 17 assists. Taylor Noid also had five digs.

Hanson (5-1) won the JV and C matches and plays Mount Vernon/Plankinton Thursday in Mount Vernon. Howard (0-4) plays Parker Thursday in Flandreau.

Wolsey-Wessington 3, Corsica/Stickney 2

STICKNEY — Wolsey-Wessington edged Corsica/Stickney 3-2 in a high school volleyball game Tuesday.

Jackie Dethlefsen had five aces, 11 kills and seven blocks in the loss. Rachel Milligan recorded 20 kills, while Brianna Kuyper had 16 digs.

Monica Hentzi had 40 assists and 17 digs in the win. Brittany Bergquist recorded a game-high 38 kills.

Chamberlain 3,

Burke/South Central 0

CHAMBERLAIN — The Chamberlain Cubs volleyball team defeated Burke/South Central in three sets Tuesday.

Set scores were 25-12, 25-15, 25-23.

Ilaria Giuli had 10 kills and two blocks to lead the way for Chamberlain. Abbie Handel added three aces and seven assists for the Cubs, who are 2-2. Kennedy Wagner had seven kills and six assists, while Brigitte Byrd had 13 digs.

Burke/South Central was led by Sierra Votaw and Grace Hazen. Votaw had 11 kills and two blocks, while Hazen had 15 kills. Shailhyn Schweigert added 11 assists and 11 digs.

The Cougars (1-5) play St. Mary’s (Neb.) Thursday in Bonesteel. Chamberlain (2-2) plays Todd County Tuesday in Todd County.

Ethan 3, Mount Vernon/Plankinton 1

PLANKINTON — The Ethan Rustlers volleyball team beat the Mount Vernon/Plankinton Titans in four sets Tuesday.

Set scores were 25-21, 17-25, 26-24, 25-24.

Ethan was led by Kaycee McGuire, who had three aces and 10 digs. Anna Mueller added 13 kills, while Holley Lindeman had 21 assists and Darbi Gustafson had nine kills and four blocks.

Mikayla Weiss had nine kills and six assists to lead Mount Vernon/Plankinton. Makaela Karst and Jordan Achterberg each had four aces and Kallyn Prangley added 24 digs.

Mount Vernon Plankinton won the JV game 2-1.

Ethan (4-2) plays Menno Thursday. The Titans (2-1) play Hanson Thursday in Mount Vernon.

Mitchell Christian 3,

Wessington Springs 0

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — The Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles volleyball team defeated Wessington Springs in three sets tuesday.

Set scores were 26-24, 25-11, 25-21.

Cassidy Graham led MCS with five aces and 11 digs. Emily Reynen chipped in with 11 kills and Ashley Schmit had eight kills. Emily Schrag added 23 assists and Abbie Reynen had six blocks.

Wessington Springs was led by Devin Tebay. Tebay had three aces and two blocks. Sheyanne Brodkorb had six kills, Lexi Olinger had 11 assists and Shyanne Kopfmann had two blocks.

Wessington Springs (1-2) plays Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Tuesday in Wessington Springs. MCS (3-3) plays Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Thursday at Mitchell Christian School.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman 3, Huron 1

HURON — The Huron volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to fourth-ranked Sioux Falls O’Gorman Tuesday.

Set scores were 22-25, 25-28, 25-22, 25-21.

Halee Allerdings recorded 13 kills, and 11 digs for Huron. Asia King had 11 kills, while Kelly McCarty had 34 assists.

The Tigers dropped to 1-2 and host Brandon Valley Thursday, while the Knights improved to 3-0 and travel to Rapid City for games Friday and Saturday.

McCook Central/Montrose 3,

Sioux Valley 1

Montrose — The McCook Central/Montrose volleyball team got its first win of the season after defeating Sioux Valley in four sets Tuesday.

Set scores were 18-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23.

Danielle Hansen led the Fighting Cougars with 15 kills, one block and four digs. C.J. Ristesund had nine kills, one block and 19 digs, while Laura Klaudt had four kills, 26 assists, 13 digs and four aces for MCM.

Sioux Valley was led by Mariah Vander Wal. Vander Wal had 20 kills, five blocks and three aces. Tiffany Bjorklund chipped in with nine kills.

The Fighting Cougars (1-6) play at Flandreau Thursday. Sioux Valley plays Garretson Thursday.

Lyman 3, Colome 0

COLOME — The Lyman Raiders defeated Colome 3-0 in a high school volleyball match Tuesday.

Set scores were 25-14, 25-19, 26-24.

Anna Flitner led the way for Lyman with 14 kills, six digs and two aces. Sara Herman chipped in with 10 digs and two aces, while Jessica Welter added nine kills, seven digs, three blocks and two aces.

Colome was led by Mariah Kinzer and Lauren Week. Kinzer had nine kills, while Week had five aces, four digs and eight assists. Rylee Jo Rutten had nine digs and Taylor Hrabanek had six aces for Colome.

Lyman (6-1) plays at New Underwood Thursday, while Colome (1-3) plays Jones County Thursday in Murdo.

Marion 3, Canistota 0

CANISTOTA — The Marion Bears volleyball team beat the Canistota Hawks Tuesday in three sets.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, 25-17.

Erica Schoenwald led the way for Marion, recording 13 kills, four blocks, nine digs, three aces and one assist. Renae Kayser added 18 assists, 12 digs, three kills, one block and one ace for the Bears, while Devin Nelson had 14 digs, nine kills, one assist and one block.

Canistota was led by Chloe Nielsen, who had three kills, four blocks and three aces. Jenny Hofer had five blocks and Morgan Larson had two kills and 10 assists for the Hawks.

Marion (4-2) plays Dell Rapids St. Mary’s Monday in Marion. Canistota plays Scotland Thursday in Scotland.
