Wagner to host 300 competitors in Labor Day rodeo

WAGNER — Nearly 300 participants will compete in the 113th annual Wagner Labor Day rodeo over the weekend.

A purse of nearly $20,000 will be won during the three-day event, which begins today and concludes Monday. The rodeo begins at 7:30 nightly.

The South Dakota Rodeo Association’s top two bareback riders — Chance Englebert, of Burdock, and Mark Kenyon, of Hayti — will compete in the bareback competition during opening night. Their performances will be challenged Sunday night by 2013 National High School World Champion Shane O’Connell, of Rapid City, and the 2010 Indian National Finals All-Around World Champion Joe Wilson, of Long Valley.

Another all-star filled event is barrell racing as Dori Hollenbeck, of Winner, and Wrangler National Finals competitor Jill Moody, of Letcher, are set to compete in Saturday’s lineup.

Many other circuit champions are set to compete throughout the weekend.

Gizmo McCracken is the entertainer this year and has worked 11 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit finals rodeos, Dodge National Circuit Finals and Cheyenne Frontier Days twice. He was also the feature act at the 2005 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Along with competitors from South Dakota, others will travel from Wyoming, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas to compete this weekend.
