Harrisburg to launch Little League team

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Little League Baseball and Softball officially announced Wednesday that its newest South Dakota league in Harrisburg will provide area children an opportunity to play baseball and softball.

“The Harrisburg Baseball Association decided that we should charter so that we could incorporate all the great things Little League has to offer, such as coaching resources and training, camps for the players, safety rules and regulations,” said Kyna Engelhart, Harrisburg Little League organizer. “There are so many others I could list.”

Registration for the 2014 Harrisburg Little League inaugural season will be early next year and is open to all children ages 4 to 18. The league will have baseball and softball divisions, and will be eligible to compete in the Little League international tournament.

“We are excited to welcome Harrisburg into the Little League family,” said Sam Ranck, Little League Development and Affiliation manager and director of the Little League Challenger Division “Little League provides children a place to learn the fundamentals of baseball and softball, but more importantly teaches valuable life lessons of character, courage and loyalty. Thank you to all the parents and volunteers who will make this first season, and many to follow, a great success.”

The Harrisburg Little League joins thousands of leagues around the world as on official Little League program. In 2014, Little League International will celebrate its 75th anniversary. In addition to providing free educational materials for coaches, umpires, volunteers and parents, Little League is the leader in youth baseball and softball in on-field and off-field player safety. Stressing the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship and citizenship, Little League provides a local community an opportunity for children and parents to make new friends in a safe and fun environment.
