Parkston 5th, Mitchell 6th at Pierre Invitational
PIERRE — Parkston and Mitchell each had two players finish in the top 10 individually at the Pierre Invitational Tuesday.
Garret Hohn, of Parkston, tied for seventh after shooting a 74. Parkston’s Jake Weber and Mitchell’s Jacob Rice and Jaron Weich were in a five-way tie for 10th with 76s.
Mitchell co-head coach Rob Marchand and Parkston head coach Tyler Hockett said their top players have earned success by putting in time during the offseason and working hard.
“The time is really starting to pay off and he had several chances to shoot lower,” Hockett said of Hohn, who was two strokes off the leader. “He really got into a good rhythm on the back nine.”
Rapid City Central’s Noah Fenske won the individual title, shooting a 72. Rapid City Stevens won the team crown with a 299 and was the only team to shoot under 300. Aberdeen Central took second (301), Rapid City Central was third (301), Watertown finished fourth (305) and Parkston rounded out the top five with a 315. The Kernels were sixth with a 323.
Both Mitchell and Parkston took one stroke off their season-opening team scores.
“I’m very happy with the how the guys played,” Marchand said. “Some of the kids haven’t played the course and it’s challenging, so we did well considering some have never seen it before.”
The course plays host to the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament later in the season, and Marchand added, “It was a good trial run for us.”
Parkston travels to the Sioux Falls Christian Invitational Thursday, while Mitchell is back in action Friday in Huron.
