Kernels swept by Roosevelt

Despite two home runs, the Mitchell High School girls’ fastpitch softball team was swept by Sioux Falls Roosevelt Monday at Cadwell Park Sports Complex.

The Kernels (1-7) suffered 9-8 and 14-0 losses to the Rough Riders.

In the opening game, Mitchell trailed 9-4 heading into the seventh inning. With a two-run homer by senior Jenna Skinner, the Kernels were able to cut the lead. However, Mitchell wasn’t able to bring any more runners across the plate, ending the game.

“I’m happy with the adjustments we made at the plate,” said Mitchell head coach Jim Misiaszek, whose team scored all of its runs after the fourth inning. “We rushed things and were impatient to start, but they settled in and made the changes.”

Skinner went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the game. Junior Hallie Misiaszek went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while freshman Jayci Hinker went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs for Mitchell, which totaled 12 hits in the loss.

Sophomore Andrea Konz took the loss on the mound, striking out four.

In the second game, Mitchell fell in three innings. Megan Zephier and Hallie Misiaszek had the team’s only two hits. Zephier also took the loss on the mound.

Jim Misiaszek said his team has been inconsistent up to this point.

“That’s just something we have to get through,” he said. “We’re inconsistent at the plate, defensively and in the circle. They are just rushing to do everything right and are playing too quick.”

Mitchell is back in action Sept. 3 against Sioux Falls Lincoln. The doubleheader begins at 6 p.m. in Sioux Falls.
