DWU volleyball team opens season 1-1

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team got its first win of the season Friday at the Mount Mercy University volleyball tournament.

The Tigers dropped its first game to St. Ambrose University 22-25, 23-25, 14-25, but DWU bounced back beating William Penn in four sets (25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18) to earn its first victory.

“Things were pretty good,” DWU volleyball coach Eric Viney said. “We played relatively consistent for most of the day. Offensively, we did some pretty good things with our fast service. We let the other team get momentum in the first game, and we didn’t have enough gas to come back, but we competed very hard in every set.”

The Tigers are back in action today as they face Ashford University at 9 a.m. and Graceland University at 12:30 p.m.

“If we want to win (today), we have to keep our serves longer than we did Friday,” Viney said. “Keeping momentum is going to be a big task for us. We had two- and three-point rallies Friday but we need to have four-and five-point rallies today.”
