MC/MV returns 9 starts, begins season today

Although Mitchell Christian/Mount Vernon boys’ soccer team returns 9 starters from last year’s team, many are having to adjust to new positions.

“We’re having to rearrange a little bit based on who we lost,” head coach Bob Lemon said, adding the program lost three kids from last year. “While they were starters, some are playing completely different positions, and it will be an adjustment for some of them to get ready for new assignments.”

The nine returning starters from last year’s squad are Ethan Cooper, Riley Shields, Austin Graves, Phillip Millar, Cody Gromer, Levi Knight, Craig Van Zee, Patrick Zapf and Noah Bowman. Millar, who travels to Mount Vernon with Graves to play, is the team’s captain and only senior.

“He’s brought a lot of experience and energy,” Lemon said of Millar. “It says something about his desire to play the sport and to be a part of the co-op to come play every day.”

Mitchell Christian/Mount Vernon, which went 2-7-2 last season, has a new face in the goal — Bowman. The team lost goalkeeper Aaron Lemon, who was forced to sit out this season after a knee injury.

Bob Lemon said Bowman was the reserved goalkeeper last season and saw game time.

The team opens the season today as it plays James Valley Christian at 6 p.m. today in Huron. Lemon, who has 14 kids out this year, said the team hasn’t been able to simulate a game atmosphere because it can’t field two full teams.

“Things will happen (today) that these guys haven’t seen in practice,” he said. “It will be an eye-opening experience for them and use it as a teaching tool and evaluate from there.”

Mitchell Christian/Mount Vernon’s home opener is against Chamberlain at 5 p.m. Sept. 3 at the
