Wesleyan women add final recruit

JuJu Berryhill is the final recruit on the upcoming year's roster for the Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball team, it was announced Friday.

Berryhill, of Rialto, Calif., averaged 16.2 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists in her senior season at Eisenhower High School.

Mitchell White sweeps Brookings

Thursday, Mitchell White swept Brookings in a doubleheader 20-1 and 7-6 at Drake Field in Mitchell.

In the first game, Tim Morgan was the winning pitcher, giving up one earned run on two hits while striking out four in four innings.

Batters one through six for Mitchell went 16-for-17 with 16 runs scored in the first game. Jordan Dirkes, Tate Larson, Brandon McKnight, Cole Long and Jeremiah Schmitz and Morgan were the six batters.

Larson went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and McKnight went 3-for-3 with a base on balls and three runs scored in the game.

In the second game, Morgan started and pitched six innings. Morgan had five strikeouts for White. Garret Johnson earned the win in relief as he didn't give up a hit in the final inning.

McKnight went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Larson went 2-for-4, including a two-out walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.

Mitchell White (12-24) is playing in the Sioux Falls Midsummer Shootout Tournament this weekend.

Waddell breaks three state records

MINNEAPOLIS -- Tevyn Waddell broke three South Dakota state records and qualified for the USA Swimming Junior Nationals this week at the USA Swimming Sectional Meet in Minneapolis, Minn.

The meet began Wednesday and concludes today.

Waddell broke state records for the girls' 15-16 division in the 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle. The 100 and 200 records were from 1990, while the 400 record stood since 2007.

Waddell finished 21 in the 400. She also competed in the 800-meter freestyle, took ninth in the 200-meter backstroke and was 16th in the 100-meter backstroke.

She qualified for junior nationals, which is in Greensboro, N.C., in December, in the 200-meter backstroke.

Tyndall earns berth to state teener tourney

TABOR -- Tyndall earned a berth to the state tournament Friday as it made it to the championship game of Region 3A 13-14 teener baseball tournament.

Tyndall defeated Spearfish 11-7 to advance to the title game, which is at 2:30 p.m. today in Tabor. Cole Goehring was the winning pitcher. Chase Kortan had a triple, double and single, and Bryce Scieszinski had three hits in the win.

Parkston beat Winner 22-20 Friday to advance. Kyler Holzbauer and Dawson Semmler each had a triple and two singles for Parkston.

Parkston plays Mission at noon today with the winner moving on to play Spearfish for a state tournament berth.

There were four games Wednesday.

In the first game of the day, Mission defeated Chamberlain 13-7. Jaden Matthews took the loss for Chamberlain, which had four hits in the game.

Chamberlain's Tiegen Priebe had three hits.

In the second, Winner beat Redfield 16-4. Riley Calhoun was the winning pitcher and Nick Lantz was 3-for-3 with two doubles.

Spearfish defeated Parkston 11-3 in the third game. Parkston's Semmler took the loss.

Tyndall topped Lead/Deadwood 11-1 in the final game of the day as Kortan struck out 12 batters in four innings in the win. Collin Adams was 2-for-3 for Tyndall.

Miner/McCook in title game of Region 5B Legion tourney

SALEM -- The Minor/McCook Legion baseball team reached the championship of the Region 5B tournament Friday.

Miner/McCook beat Irene 12-3 to advance Friday. The team also had a win over Kingsbury Wednesday.

In the title game, Miner/McCook plays the winner of Irene and Humboldt/Hartford, which will be played at 1 p.m. today.
