Bormann wins Midwest Junior Championship

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Parkston's Sydney Bormann won the Midwest Junior Championship on the final hole Tuesday at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines, Iowa.

Bormann recorded a 158 to beat Kenzie Wright, of Frisco, Texas, who scored a 159.

After the first day, Bormann and Wright each shot a 79 and trailed the leader by two strokes. Bormann's second round score of 79 ousted the second-place finisher as Wright shot an 80.

Parkston's Sydney Weber took 15th in the tournament, shooting a two-day score of 180.

Mitchell Black sweeps Huron

Jed Schmidt and Bryce Geraets both had three hits in the opener and Baley Miller threw a five-hitter in the late game as Mitchell Black swept Huron in a teener baseball doubleheader Tuesday at Drake Field.

Mitchell won the first game 12-9 and followed with a 13-1 win in the late game.

In the opener, Mitchell took a 10-1 lead after the third inning before Huron rallied late.

Along with Schmidt and Geraets' three hits apiece, Parker Wenzel, Spencer Neugebauer and Miller all had two hits.

Wenzel was the winning pitcher, throwing into the sixth inning. He allowed six hits and five walks while striking out four. Sam Michels pitched the final four outs.

In the second game, Miller pitched five innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out three.

Mitchell had five hits, led by a Schmidt double. Huron pitchers issued nine walks and hit five batters.

Mitchell is 17-12 and plays in a tournament in Aberdeen this weekend.

Alexandria beats Mount Vernon 7-1

ALEXANDRIA -- Tyson Gau was 3-for-4 and pitched two innings in relief to help the Alexandria Angels beat the Mount Vernon Cardinals 7-1 in a Sunshine League game Tuesday.

Cory Marek started on the mound for Alexandria and earned the win. He threw seven innings, giving up three hits and striking out nine.

Chase Hetland was the losing pitcher for Mount Vernon. He pitched eight innings, giving up 12 hits and striking out three.

Chris Marek and Chet McManus each finished with 2-for-4 performances for Alexandria, which had 12 hits as a team.

Cody London, Nate Zens and Justin Davis had the only three hits for Mount Vernon.

Alexandria is back in action against Mitchell at 5 p.m. Sunday in Mitchell. Mount Vernon travels to Parkston to take on the Parkston Mudcats at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Bankers earn 7-3 league victory

WHITE LAKE -- The Kimball/White Lake Bankers beat Miller/Wessington 7-3 in a Pony Hills League game Sunday.

Dylan Konechne had two singles, Trent Wookey had a double and Wesley Kroupa, Brian Zeman, Preston Kristensen, Jordan Hanten and Ryan Smith each had base hits for the Bankers.

Zeman pitched a complete game to earn the win.

Miller/Wessington scored three runs in the top of the first but was shut out the rest of the way.

Next, the Bankers host Armour Sunday in White Lake.

17 teams participate in golf fundraiser

Seventeen teams played in the fifth annual Fishing Pond Inc. Golf Fundraiser June 23 at Wild Oak Golf Club in Mitchell.

There were 17 prize winners and each team had four members. The team of Randy Reider, Nick Kocourek, Kellen Weidner and Dave Backlund Jr. won the championship flight. Above are more results.

Chamberlain beats South Central

CHAMBERLAIN -- Sam Tyrell singled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lift Chamberlain to a 5-4 victory in a Legion baseball game.

Post 3 tied the game in the ninth on an error after giving up the lead in the eighth.

Zach Kenobbie got the win in relief of Jacob Bloch, who allowed three hits in 7 1/3 innings, while striking out eight.

Kenobbie led Chamberlain with three singles and an RBI. Tyrell had two singles and an RBI. Hudson Priebe, Davis Carson, Chris Schwartz, Wyatt Schumacher, Jacob Byre and Parker Evans each had one hit in the win.

For South Central, Dustin Stukel took the loss after throwing a complete game. Turner Serr and Brian Juran each had two hits in the loss.

Mitchell Junior Legion splits with BV

Jacob Cersosimo got his second win of the season as the Mitchell junior Legion baseball team split two baseball games with Brandon Valley Tuesday at Drake Field.

Mitchell won the first game 7-6 before dropping the second game of the doubleheader 15-5.

Cersosimo won the opening game after throwing all seven innings and giving up six runs on six hits. He struck out 12.

Carter Star was the losing pitcher in the second game of the doubleheader, pitching 4 2/3 innings.

Star and Mitchell Price each had three hits on the day to lead Mitchell. Star had all three of his hits in the second game, while Price had two hits in game one and one hit in the second. Brady Bathke was 2-for-4 in the final game.

Mitchell takes the field again Friday at the Brookings wood-bat tournament in Brookings.
